BioWare's Ray Muzyka: "There's No Looking Back" After The Old Republic

"Once you've tried it, you just can't go back," Muzyka says. "You don't want to try other MMOs anymore."

The quote comes from a recent interview that both Ray Muzyka and fellow BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk completed with Gamasutra. "We've got the best-of-breed features from other MMOs, progression, exploration, customization, combat, and trying to use the conventions that make sense to players for accessibility wherever possible. We've layered on an amazing Star Wars story that's set thousands of years before the movies, so there are a lot of opportunities [you can] have like Sith and Jedi, galactic conflict and all kinds of cool s---. It's a really exciting time to be in the Star Wars universe.Once you've tried it, there's no looking back. You really want to keep playing that new approach to MMOs, I think that is really refreshing."

The rest of the interview includes comments on a number of topics close to the hearts of BioWare fans, from the potential of the mobile game space to the possibility of one day seeing BioWare tackle more realistic subject matter instead of fantasy/sci-fi.

  • not first!
  • sounds cool

  • Hopefully I will be able to run this and afford it!!

  • sounds amazing.

  • I will never leave LOTRO! (I will still play this game, for sure, I am SUPER excited, but that doesn't mean I won't look back)

  • I honestly hope it works out for them

  • and i'm ok with that

  • hope theres a free trial, i almost bought wow after hearing all about it from my friend. glad i had second thoughts
  • If this is as good as it is supposed to be, it will be the first MMORPG I keep with and play for more than a couple of months. I liked WoW, but after a while it just wasn't as engaging anymore, in my opinion,  and I stopped playing. I really want The Old Republic to be great because I want to try and get into the MMO genre again and I feel this could be the game that gives me that opportunity.

  • Staff
This game might get me into MMOs at long last.
  • I heard complaining from those who played parts of it that it's basically just WoW with Star Wars pasted over it. The first mission as a Sith is to kill rats. (According to Angry Joe)
  • Super excited for The Old Republic. If nothing else for 8 different stories to play through :) I wish Bioware all the best on this project.

  • I hope this doesn't come out sooner than we might think. I'm not ready to buy a gaming rig yet.
  • Didn't they say similar things about Dragon Age 2? We all know how that turned out. I love Bioware for Mass Effect and KOTOR but...
  • I want Knights of the Old Republic 3.
  • What they're trying to do is combine all the best parts of all mmos and mash it into one game. Sounds great, but won't be enough. It won't be revolutionary enough to capture large large audience. Playing too safe.
  • Yea, that's the idea with every MMO smart guys... to ruthlessly hook you. Not a good thing... *clicks the story closed hard, as if to slam a door*
  • I quit MMOs, and I hope to never go back!

  • Uhm...okay? I'm pretty sure that's how every MMO is supposed to be, but whatever. I won't be playing this anyway, unless I suddenly get a (free) new (bad*ss) PC.
  • don't hate me but from what i saw it is a wow clone and doesn't look a11 that good
