Can Battlefield 3 Really Take On Call Of Duty?

by Jeff Marchiafava on May 16, 2011 at 04:02 PM

Last week EA revealed its plan to help the Battlefield series take on Call Of Duty, which includes spending $100 million on advertising. But does DICE's military shooter really have what it takes to compete with Activision's dominating franchise?

The most recent numbers we have for Bad Company 2 put total sales around seven million, compared to Modern Warfare 2's 20+ million. There's good reason to believe that the return of the core Battlefield series will sell  more copies than its Bad Company brethren, but I'm still not convinced it won't get thrashed by Modern Warfare 3, even though I admittedly prefer DICE's style of shooter.

So, what do you think? Will Battlefield 3 sales approach that of the next installment of COD? Can a post-West/Zampella Modern Warfare 3 even compete with MW 2 sales? Or do you think the Modern Warfare series will continue to outsell anything on the market?
