Bethesda Releases Brink Lag Patch, Promises Free DLC

by Matt Bertz on May 13, 2011 at 02:33 PM

Developer Splash damage thinks it has found a solution to the lag issues plaguing Brink, and is offering a token of appreciation to fans who have stuck with them during the rough launch.

As I noted in my review, crippling lag has disrupted many multiplayer sessions to the point that sometimes you just want to give up playing. Splash Damage has diagnosed the problem (sort of) and has created a new matchmaking configuration that limits the number of human players to eight for campaign matches and most Freeplay modes. This should create more reliable rooms, but this solution seems to come up short when you consider that scores of multiplayer games run without a hitch and feature exponentially more participants. The last thing I want to do in Brink is play more matches with the terrible bot AI.

If you want to keep playing in 8v8 human matches, select the new Big Teams configuration in Freeplay. These changes requires no further update and should work the next time you boot up the game. PC players are also receiving some AI, GPU, and server refinements. Check out the full list of improvements here.

As an offer of thanks to its fans, Splash Damage plans to make the first DLC free, which includes new maps and other unspecified content. Look for the DLC in June.
