Ubisoft Spreading Yearly Assassin's Creed Release Model To Other Properties

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot believes the company can release quality, big-budget games every year with more franchises outside of Assassin's Creed.

When Ubisoft revealed that Assassin's Creed Brotherhood was coming within a year of the release of AC II, many were skeptical of its quality. When it did release, it laid most of these fears to rest with high reviews and great sales. Now Ubisoft hopes to hit the high bar again with Assassin's Creed Revelations (this month's Game Informer cover story).

Guillemot explained the strategy on Ubisoft's yearly investor conference call.

"What is impressive with the release year after year of Assassin's Creed is our ability to deliver every time with a high level of innovation and creativity in a large and very diverse open world," he said. "There is no other open world console game that is coming on a yearly basis."

"We are applying the very [same] product template to our other strong franchises to bring them back to Assassin's Creed blockbuster profitable status," he added.

What Ubisoft franchises would you like to see on a yearly schedule?

  • I have mixed feelings for this bussiness model. On one hand, I get more of the games I love, but on the other hand I get them with less quality.

I honestly did not like Brotherhood as much as AC:2. In my opinion, they were too similar, but it was plenty of fun none the less. I still think Ubi should have given an extra year or two to work on it.

Hopefully the multiple developers on Revelations will improve the quality of it. And judging by the GI cover story, I think they're doing it.

  • Didn't they say that AC was a company-wide project? Not sure how they'll manage releasing yearly titles from multiple series that can match the standard set forth by AC if they already have the other houses lending a hand to the lead. Get hiring...
  • Assassins Creed is a good franchise, but too much of anything isn't good for you. The reason Brotherhood was released so quickly is because it's basically Assassin's Creed II with Rome and some new quirks. I'm beginning to wonder how much they can stretch this story out. How old is Ezio now, like 60?
  • PRINCE OF PERSIA!

  • I think they can handle this, Brotherhood was good but not as great as ACII, Revelations sounds sweet, It will clear all doubts we have about the game, I wanna know why Lucy was killed :'(.

Also I'm really liking Ezio's story, I've been getting attached to him a lot since we are living ALMOST ALL of his life, If they pull some sh*t on me and someone makes him die, I will be seriously mad.

I could barely stand John Marston's goodbye, I dont think I can stand watching Ezio die.
  • I love Assassin's Creed. Seriously, AC was the last push for me to get a PS3. And I fear this plan is going to slowly kill it.
  • After the 5-year long delay between major Splinter Cell releases (I may be wrong about that number, but it was definitely at least 3 years), I'd be fine with a new Splinter Cell getting released every year.

  • I was about to say I didn't want yearly releases entirely outside of Assassin's Creed, but I guess if they put out more Prince of Persia games I would be happy. I still want a sequel to the 2008 POP.
  • Sweet!

  • Well as long as the games are good, and they add enough new stuff to where it doesn't get stale, I see nothing wrong with that.
  • Ape ESCAPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I hope this game will be good.

  • YEAH!! Let's CoDify every game we can think of!!!

    d-bag.

  • Splinter Cell with a yearly release? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...Impossible.

  • "What is impressive with the release year after year of Assassin's Creed is our ability to deliver every time with a high level of innovation and creativity in a large and very diverse open world," he said. "There is no other open world console game that is coming on a yearly basis." You've only done this once with AC:2 and Brotherhood and you think you can do it again? You could say the same about Call of Duty but most would argue that COD4 is still the best in the series.
  • I love Assassin's Creed but I think it's going to turn into Call of Duty.. which let's be honest is getting a little old unless they do something revolutionary.
  • This would be nice for Prince of Persia. And maybe Splinter Cell, but it'll probably be a while before we get the next Splinter Cell if development goes anything like it did on Conviction.

  • Rayman Ghost recon Rainbow six
  • The reason ac 2 did as well is because the first was fantastic and the wait made the sales rise with all the games that come out on a year to year basis almost now ur better off at least putting a year in between why should i pay for a new title with just a different story when your really not giving your employees the time to come up with something to completely innovate the series. I mean look at L.A. Noire 7 years and the technology behind it is what gives it the ability to look as good as it does making people want to get it. i wont keep supporting these COD or GH franchises You guys just milk money for example STREET IV theres a third addition of it just with new character i mean come on guys wtf
  • Pretty much all of the greatest games ever have taken years to make, with release dates pushed back and everything. Forcing developers to put out games yearly will have negative impacts on quality. The Assassins Creed team is just an exception to the rule, in my opinion. Besides, they have a team of 400+ people so that kind of speed is a little easier.
