The lights are on
One of the most beloved SNES RPGs is finally hitting the Virtual Console. Square Enix has announced that Chrono Trigger will be available for download on Nintendo's download service on May 16.
If you haven't played it before (for shame!), Chrono Trigger is a time-traveling epic spanning several eras, from the prehistoric days to the end times of 1999 AD. Wait a sec. What year is it again? Never mind.
You can have it all for a cool 800 Wii Points ($8), which is far cheaper than what you'll see on eBay.

I suppose it's not worth complaining about. But seriously; who hasn't played Chrono Trigger yet - on SNES, PSX or DS - who will actually jump in now, on Virtual Console? I just don't see the audience here, except for perhaps people who will rebuy it? I know that a fair number of people who bought VC games when it launched were rebuying classics like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time.
Oh well. Have a blast if you've never played this before. It's generally excellent; a near perfect bland of Dragon Quest IV and Final Fantasy VI, with some of the best sprite art ever put out into video gamedom. And Yasunori Mitsuda's soundtrack is wonderful (though I think Chrono Cross' is better). This is a reminder why Square-Enix has so much clout with gamers today, even though everything they put out today is generally crap loaded with too much Tetsuya Nomura influence. That guy is a clown compared to Hironobu Sakaguchi and Yuji Horii; the men responsible for this wonderful, memorable game.
I wish they'd partner up again nowadays, considering Sakaguchi is in charge of his own company. Horii can take a break from Dragon Quest X to work on something for Mistwaker, right?
One of the all-time greats. I'm definitely downloading it.
I was worried that I wouldn't get the chance to play this as soon as I wanted because of PSN being down. I thank all the gods in the heavens for Nintendo.
I got this game for the DS and its perfect in that set but will there be anything new now?
Any news on a new version wether spin off or new stories?
I need to know what that baby she got truly is, not fan fics!
And all the big-time RPG fans went "SQUUEEEEEE."
It's about time though. You'd think a big name classic like this would have come out sooner.
Can we update the graphics?
Why can't we get any great old school RPG's on XBLA? Imagine this or FFVI with achievements and HD support. I want it now!!!!
Good to hear, but I already got a physical copy of the game. That, and I sold my Wii ages ago. Ah, well. To those who are getting it on the Wii, enjoy!
Every time I see a Chrono Trigger remake, I think of the 3d Chrono trigger that could have been.
Google "Chrono Resurrection"
Since I like to think of myself as a total purist, I'd much rather track down and own a physical copy of the game, but I guess that's just me.
And in regards to those who have never played this, you'd be depriving yourself of a great game. It's one of the best *** games ever made for a good reason ya know.
Chrono Trigger's characters are cute, but fierce!
800 points well spent!
I enjoyed this game a lot when I played it. Unfortunately, the Wii is becoming more of a nuisance to play. I don't know what it is about the system that I don't like, but I just can't seem to get my gaming mojo on when I try firing it up to play. It used to be fun, but not so much anymore. Therefore, I won't be getting this game.
Woo! I've bought it on SNES, the Playstation, and got my G/F the DS verison. Now I can buy a Wii and get it again.
