Where's Our Brink Review?

If you're looking for the official Game Informer review of Splash Damage's latest multiplayer-intensive shooter, be patient. We want to test it in the wild before we make our final verdict.

In playing Brink over the past week, one thing has become abundantly clear – this is a multiplayer game first and foremost. The single-player experience is basically bot matches with the same objectives and maps as the multiplayer offerings. When reviewing a game of this nature, it's hard to accurately critique the play experience without spending a considerable amount of time with the maps and the community. The game is also due to receive a significant patch this week, and we're not comfortable handing down a verdict or talking about the technical performance until we experience the game as a consumer would if they purchased the game.

Look for our review in the coming days, and in the meantime please add your hands-on impressions in the comments section below.

  • I was hoping to see this review quickly but it's understandable why they don't have it, as he explains. All I know is they better not do this with L.A. Noire. I want to know that as soon as possible. (Don't know why they would tbh but just saying)
  • Well, ign gave it a 6. But they are morons.
  • I'm glad to hear your waiting a little bit. other cites seemed to put up reviews that seemed a little rushed, but what do i know, they all could be right
  • Regardless of review I already have it pre-ordered.

  • I have now played it for a few hours and I'm pissed off to say that it sucks. I gave it all the chances I could. I have been looking forward to this game for a long time and to be honest, if it was competent in ANY way I would have stuck with it and became a hardcore player.
That said, absolutely nothing works. The AI is terrible but not as bad as playing online with all the lag. I literally couldn't shoot or even move because of the lag and I tried several different matches. After not being able to participate in even one online game I tried the campaign with the bots. I could actually play in those games but they got extremely boring fast. The game suffers from trying to do too many things at once. I could do the sub objectives but why would I want to when I have the main one to complete? There is just so much going on that it is a bad thing.
I love the art style but I was dismayed when I started playing the game and couldn't even appreciate it because the textures wouldn't load, and even when they did they were terrible looking. It is almost like playing on the original xbox. I still can't believe how disappointed I am with this game. It doesn't just fail to live up to the hype, it fails to even function. I will continue playing this all night till I can't take it anymore because I want to give it a fair chance but honestly I feel ripped off and only a miracle will keep me from selling this to gamestop tomorrow.

    TL;DR
Cool ideas, mediocre implementation, horrendous technical issues. If and when these issues are resolved this could be a cool niche game that I would play but as it stands i'm having trouble even playing the freaking thing, nevertheless enjoying it.
  • glad you guys didnt blow your load too fast like ign did. even if it only gets a 5 or 6 at least yall took the time to do it right. cant wait to try it out tonorrow.

  • I am still watching the intro movie for 1000 experience. I am also falling asleep.
  • I'm just gonna say it...this game was over-hyped, and I always thought that this was going to be a crap game. IGN gave it a 6, but as usual I will take GI's review more seriously, so I look forward to what they have to say about it.
  • This... is a weird article. But cool, I hope you get a good handle on the title. I understand reviewing it now would be like reviewing UT3 after just having played the "campaign" and before any of the patches came out.

  • I am glad, you guys are doing this. It makes absolutely no sense to review an online multiplayer before it reaches the public. Kudos Gameinformer.
  • I have the feeling everyone's going to disappointed in this game and I'm not sure why...
EDIT:Well one guy is unhappy with it already.
  • Im glad that you guys are giving it some time and waiting for the patch to come out before you give the final verdict on the game. Cause as a previous post had said IGN gave it a 6 which i feel is a little under rated but they may have it right i have myself not played the game yet

  • To bad PS3 owners (like me) will miss out on the online aspects :(. But I'm glad to hear about delaying the review until getting some true game time in with the open community. Who is reviewing the game? Is it you Bertz or are you allowed to release that information? Just wondering is all.
  • I was really looking forward to this game until I found out about two weeks ago that it only had three modes of play, which is really two. It's been downhill from there, and even without extensive online testing, the reviews I've read so far have told me everything I needed to know. Looks like instead of picking the game up tomorrow, I'll be moving my resurve to something else. In a world that has Reach, Battlefield, and (for all you monkeys) COD, Splash Damage shouldn't have wasted their time or ours.
  • I'm loving brink so far

I just hope it doesn't get boring because I could see it happening

Overall I'm having a really great time right now

Thanks game informer for the best reviews in the business

  • I never understood why anyone puts out a review for a game before it is released. I guess it doesn't really matter for single player only games but many games nowadays are all about multiplayer and it seems odd to why anyone would review a game before they can try out the whole thing.
  • Please review console and PC separately - I'm hearing a lot of mixed opinions regarding gameplay for both versions.
  • in personal opinion i give it a 9.1...the story brings it down but a solid multiplayer shooter to be had!
  • Excellent. How the multiplayer handles on consoles is what i'm most concerned about.

http://www.lensoftruth.com/head2head-brink-screenshot-comparison/ - Upclose scrolling comparisons of the graphics. PC looks best. Consoles both have weaknesses in different areas. I'd argue PS3 looks better than 360, but has no online so you lose either way unless you're playing on PC.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/05/why-were-not-review-brink-and-why-you-shouldnt-buy-it-yet.ars - Really, really disappointed that they didn't choose to have dedicated servers for consoles after reading this, but i saw it coming.

I feel sorry for these guys. The game has so many good elements with the style, classes, parkour, teambased objectives that make me want to play it. But why on earth would you release a game that doesn't run smoothly on all consoles if you're going to go through the effort of making them all look good. It just doesn't make any sense. Hope these issues can be patched and i am overreacting.

Personally, i'd have pushed the release date back to July. No big AAA games are coming out in July. That gives you plenty of time to set up a decent online system and for PSN to come back up in an online focused game. What exactly was the big push in releasing in May??
  • I feel you guys don't delay reviews enough for games such as Brink. I'm glad that you announced this as soon as you have, and I encourage you to state this before reviews of MMO's and online FPS games.
