[Update] Star Wars Coming To Blu-ray For The First Time

The timer has finished counting down, and it looks as though the Star Wars news has nothing to do with video games. That won't stop you from watching the films on your PlayStation 3, since the entire collection is being released on Blu-ray for the first time.

The nine-disc set includes all six movies, as well as bonus discs containing footage from various spoofs, new documentaries, and more. The set will be available Sept. 12 internationally and Sept. 16 in North America. Those extra four days shouldn't kill you, since you've already seen these movies about a million times already. Right? It carries a suggested retail price of $139.99, so start saving.

Tomorrow is May 4, an opportunity that many punsters out there have taken advantage of for years to use the phrase "May the Fourth be with you." Hilarious, right? Dumb joke aside, the studio behind Star Wars is using this date to announce something big about its beloved franchise.

Several GI editors (along with numerous other sources around the web) received the following image in our e-mail inboxes this afternoon. The address listed above points toward a countdown showing that an announcement is set to happen in just over 12 hours.

Given the prominent placement of the Blu-ray logo and the "Star Wars: The Complete Saga" name, the most popular theory floating around the web right now is that the announcement will concern the upcoming rerelease of the Star Wars movies in Blu-ray format -- perhaps a reveal of the exact contents of the Blu-ray packs? Others think it will be an official announcement of rumored 3D theatrical rereleases of the Star Wars films.

Curiously, though, we were actually sent the image by LucasArts, the video game publishing branch of Lucasfilm, making some of us wonder if there might be a game-related announcement coming. Then again, maybe it was just crossed wires. It's still too early to tell, but we'll be watching the countdown and digging for any other information we can find. Look for an update here as soon as we know more.

    Could easily be the much rumored 3rd trilogy. Or maybe an action adventure style game that plays through the entire saga to date. Or something else. Who know?

    i think it just deals with the contents of the blu ray saga pack. As much as i would like it to be game related though

    If it's not Battlefront 3, it's meaningless to me. Tired of everyone cashing in on the canon, too.

    People have been asking for Battlefront 3 since the second one came out. Five years later and there still hasn't even been a freaking announcement!! What are you doing, LucasArts?!

    It would be fantastic to have the Saga on Bluray. All of mine are VHS, I need an update like this! Or, like everyone else says, Battlefront 3 would make my century. I got through so many boring summer days with the first two, a fresh take on something so dear to my heart would be wickedddddddd.

    No its all information about Star Wars on Blu-Ray and all the features we can look forward to in September.  I already paid off my Complete Saga about a month ago and have been eagerly waiting to see what the features are going to be!!!

    I can't help but feel this is just announcing that all six films will be released on Blu-ray in one package. But here's hoping for something more substantial.

    It's Star Wars Episode 7! A movie comprised of all your favorite characters: Jar Jar Binks and the Ewoks! Remastered and definitely not completely ruined by George Lucas!

    Hopefully, this wasn't just a screw up and there IS some game-related news in here.

    For the sake of speculation, any HD remakes of Battlefront 1 and 2 would cover the Complete Saga AND likely get a Blu-Ray release via appearing on PS3. But the chances of that are very slim, so hopefully this will have something to do with some of LucasArts' developer acquisitions from last year.

    It's going to be them releasing the series on Blueray with the 30 hours of special features.

    I've already got 3 different versions of the original trilogy. 1 on VHS and 2 on DVD so this better have something amazing on it. It's going to have 1 new scene where Luke puts together his green lightsaber so i'll probably get it. Hopefully we can buy the original trilogy separately from the prequels...

    www.bluray.com has been covering this for a while now with inside info, its all the content we can expect on the bluray copies and some screen shots I heard.

    As much i as desire a Battlefront 3, it's gonna be the announcement of the remakes of all the movies in HD/3D.

    I just thought about this after leaving the page... What if the Blu-Ray Saga Collection comes with a beta key for Star Wars Battlefront 3? Yes? No? Anyone? Anyone?
