StarCraft II Factional Win Percentages Converging On 50 Percent

Reddit user Ctushik has collated a huge set of data from popular competitive StarCraft II website Team Liquid to create a pretty graph of top players' win percentages for Terran, Protoss, and Zerg over the last six months.

The biggest "imbalance" is a three-point swing in Terran's favor in its Zerg matchup, with humans 51.8 percent of matches. The other two matchups (PvZ, PvT) are within a single percentage point. Terran enjoyed a solid lead overall last November, winning at a 57 percent clip, but balance seems to have moved in the right direction since then. All three races are within a point of the 50 percent mark overall in the last data point, which is an impressive commentary on both Blizzard's balancing efforts and the community's dedication to discovering answers to seemingly unbeatable tactics.

Ctushik pulled the data from Team Liquid's database, so it encompasses pro games, tournaments, and leagues. This data doesn't encompass people who sit around watching StarCraft replays in an effort to improve their game. This is from the gamers who well-known webcasters make videos about. So before bringing some weak "but everyone knows 4-gate is imba" argument to the comments below, know that these players could probably peon rush you to death.

  • That's cool.

  • Woo for terran

  • "but everyone knows 4-gate is imba" - I have no idea what this even means but it sounds like a totally legit arguement
  • Colossus ♥
  • I play Protoss and don't 4-gate; problem solved. Terran has been a pain in the rear at the start but have been slowly been coming down from their high horse. I still think Zerg is the most underrated and the most underutilized, least experimented race. I wouldn't be surprised if Zerg begins to take the lead (especially with the most recent buffs, like the Infestor).
  • So...... this means terran is the best?
  • How about they learn how to balance things properly rather than, "This unit is a little overpowered, let's make it stronger but remove the speed upgrade." If something is overpowered, make it weaker!

  • Interesting tidbit.

  • Regardless of how balanced the races are I still get my ass handed to me :P I guess I'm better at shooters.

  • Ok I don't even think their playing the same game I'm playing but Terran is the weakest most underpowered race in the game! Period! Whenever I play TvZ its like being David against Goliath only this time David is a foot shorter and doest even have a sling! I stopped playing SC2 because the terrans were so underpowered to the point of futility. I'm gonna get on it later and see if they've patched it or something because if not then team liquid is full of ***!
  • 4 gate is not imba.

All you have to do as T is to rush to siege tech, wall in, and get as many rax as the toss has gates and get detection just in case they tech to dark templars (invisible units).

Once you defend the push either push back or expand or both at the same time.

I eat 4-gate for breakfast *nom nom nom*

The patches are great and currently we are on 1.3.2. I hope Blizzard continues to change the meta game because it keeps things refreshing.

  • Wow. Somebody give that guy a medal. It must of taken ridiculous amounts of time to compile all that data.

  • Graph-Attack!

    Love me some stats!

  • I love this game, wish I had more time to play it. Hey GI, could you use your pull with all the Devs to get a hiatus on new games until I get all caught up?

Or someone toss me a winning powerball and I'll retire.

  • There's no such thing as an unbeatable tactic in Starcraft. Unless I'm playing, because everything is unbeatable to me.
  • Interesting, but this "encompasses pro games, tournaments, and leagues."

Sorry...but that is NOT the average player and the numbers are FAR skewed towards Terrans in match-ups that are probably about Gold and lower. The bottom line is that the game is being balanced towards the Pro leagues and by default, the average Terran player can easily A-Attack and roll the entire map with Marines and Marauders when facing another average Zerg/Protoss player.

In short, this really does not change or prove a *** thing for the masses.

[note: Gameinformer. Seriously. Censoring the word "dam"? They say that on network television, for crying out loud and by censoring it, you leave it up to the reader to assume I said "fk" or something, which is far worse. Grow up, please. Your audience has.]
  • protoss=2 gate-zealots only-mass chargelots=win game.

  • well, probability says that should happen, right?
