BlazBlue Hits 3DS, PSP On May 31

Aksys Games is bringing the 2D anime-style fighter to portable systems with BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II next month.

Calling this a sequel is overstating the case. Continuum Shift II is more accurately described as an enhanced port for handhelds. Even so, bringing an expanded version of the full home-console and arcade game to PSP and 3DS is nothing to complain about.

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II has the entire roster of characters from Continuum Shift, including the three DLC fighters. All of the rebalancing and engine tweaks present in the latest version of the original game are present as well. Two new modes -- Legion 1.5 and Abyss -- give single-player gamers new content to conquer. The 3DS version features the expected 3D effects in "nearly all game modes."

Sadly, there is no online multiplayer. Up to four players (two being spectators) can connect through local wireless.

You can view the launch trailer over at the official Aksys site. It is so very Japanese.

Any chance this is going to challenge Street Fighter for a spot in your fighting rotation? Or...some other game for PSP types?

  • I like how they didn't put 3D in all game modes, that really lowers the qualtity and shows that the 3D is just tacked on.
EDIT: Heard the game is awesome, but still just some lame tacked on 3D.
  • BlazBlue is a pretty awesome game for those who want to play something other than Street Fighter. It's fast-paced and fun to play with groups. Yes, some of the characters may seem really broken (eyes on you, Ragna!), but it's pretty satisfying to be able to pull off 20-something hits in a combo and hear the cries of your friends as you smack down that super to end the match. The portable versions have been a long time coming, and while they can't really do justice to the arcade or console versions, it's a great pick-me-up in any case. The only thing that bothers me is the purported "3D effects in 'nearly' all game modes" and the fact that a PC version is still nowhere in sight ~
  • Gameplay vid, please? I'd like to see what the game looks like running on handheld.

  • BlazBlue fanboys gave me a bad impression of this game, so pass for me.
  • long as i got my tager. cant wait XD and what better game to get on my birthmonth.

  • This looks like a pretty good fighting game. I'll keep an eye on this one.

  • This is my favorite fighting game series. I'm bummed it got delayed a week.

  • Looks like any other fighter. I'll check it out.

  • I'm pleased to see a good number of fighters making their way to the 3DS.

  • YES!!! Continuum Shift II!!! I've been waiting so long for this game FINALLY!!!

  • Sweet!!

  • Man, I love both the first and second games and I'm glad that I'm not missing out on anything special by not owning a 3DS.

  • I'll stick to psp

  • This game ...boring.

  • I'm very surprised that the site doesn't have a review for this yet.  Anyway, the game plays very well IF you can get use to the d-pad.  I'm not sure why the thumbstick wasn't even an option but it doesn't hurt the experience too much.  This game plays just like the console versions with all the upgrades and extra characters as well.  The Abyss mode is probably my favorite part of this version.  It's an endless battle mode meets RPG leveling/grinding.  The goal is to reach the bottom of the Abyss and leveling up your character will be VERY important due to tough boss battles after level 600.  It's a really neat feature but a checkpoint of some kind would have been nice since you have to start the Abyss over once you're KO'd or if you just want to quit. Again, almost everything from the console version is here from tutorials, trials, and the fun yet challenging Legion mode. The only other real down side to this game is the absence of online play.  I've already put over six hours in though due to the new Abyss mode.  If you like fighters, I suggest picking this one up.

  • blazblue is amazing
