Alan Wake Devs Plan To Beat L.A. Noire In Animation

by Phil Kollar on Apr 11, 2011 at 11:00 AM

Much has been made of L.A. Noire's incredibly impressive facial capture technology, but if Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment is to be believed, something even greater is just around the corner.

Speaking in the most recent issue of Edge (via Thumb Culture), Remedy's next project -- which may or may not be Alan Wake 2 -- will be implementing new technology that "uses motion capture as a starting point for generating scans of actors...including 64 facial poses from which [Remedy] claims every human expression can be derived."

Unlike L.A. Noire's tech, Remedy's will allow the developer to adjust facial expressions on a slider rather than capturing them directly from an actor or changing them manually. Remedy CEO Matthias Myllyrinne broke it down in an easily understandable way:

"'LA Noire has set a bar for facial animation,' said Remedy CEO Matthias Myllyrinne. Raising one hand, then placing his other significantly higher, he added: 'But [Rockstar's game] is here, we’re aiming to be here.'"

Unfortunately, it may be a while until we get to judge for ourselves whether or not Myllyrinne's statement is accurate. Remedy has no plans to publicly release the demo that Edge was shown, and they've provided no hints as to when we'll see the new project.
