Sony's Tretton Suggests NGP Will Have Higher Than Expected Price

If you've been following our coverage of Sony's NGP handheld, you'll remember that most of the official comments from company executives have suggested that unit would be affordable. This was thought to be a response to the early struggles of the PS3, which launched at $599.

In previous stories, we've reported quotes from Sony's senior vice president of product development, Shuhei Yoshida that gave the impression that an affordable price point was an important part of the company's NGP plans from the start.

However, new comments, in an interview with Fast Company, from SCEA president Jack Tretton seem to be trying to set up new expectations for consumers. While this doesn't confirm a price point, the tone of the quotes appears to be trying to prime Sony's audience for a unit that might be more expensive than expected.

“I think when you’re buying a platform, when you’re buying technology, you’re hopefully buying a device that you’re going to enjoy for many, many years,” he said. “People are used to spending several hundreds of dollars to get a portable device.

Tretton also denied that price is a make or break issue for the NGP. “It’s not to say the price of the platform isn’t a consideration,” said Tretton, “but I don’t think price makes or kills a platform. Something that’s lousy, that’s very inexpensive, is not going to be successful, and something that’s pricey will ultimately find its audience if there’s enough value there."
