Madden 12 Tackles Concussions

by Matthew Kato on Mar 31, 2011 at 05:08 AM

The NFL has increasingly been addressing the issue of player concussions, and EA Sports says Madden NFL 12 will follow suit.

EA Sports president Peter Moore announced that players who are concussed in a game will be out the entire game, and unlike other injuries you won't have the option to re-insert them.

In a tweet, NFLPA assistant executive director for external affairs, George Attalah, said: "Good for EA Sports. Concussed players in NFL Madden prevented from returning to play. Culture change is important."

Last year in the NFL teams were more cautious with players, holding them back as a precaution instead of just throwing them back into games after big hits that produced concussion symptoms. The subject of concussions is one of the issues on the table in the current impasse between the players and the league, and it's come into the spotlight as more and more retired players deal with post-career effects including early dementia, depression, and other brain damage problems.

It's unknown how long a concussed player will sit out in Madden NFL 12, and whether a concussion will produce different injury lengths for different players. I also wonder if players will be more susceptible to concussions and have longer-lasting symptoms if they've had previous concussions.
