Nintendo Realizes Downloadable Shortcomings, 3DS Will Do It Better

by Tim Turi on Mar 29, 2011 at 09:32 AM

There are some awesome Wiiware games, a few worthwhile DSiWare downloadables, and a boatload of classic Virtual Console titles. Despite these offerings, Nintendo is still an underdog in the downloadable marketplace, which the company is aware of. The 3DS marks Nintendo's first step towards more effectively embracing the digital future.

"We’ve acknowledged that digital content is an area that we have to do a better job with," Nintendo America president Reggie Fils-Aime told Joystiq at the 3DS U.S. launch event. Speaking specifically about the 3DS' upcoming eShop, Fils-Aime said it "will be wide-ranging. Everything from our own version of the Virtual Console, with Game Boy and Game Boy Color content, to all of the DSiWare content, to brand new digital content that’ll be in 2D and 3D."

I'm waiting to pick up a 3DS until Nintendo gets the eShop in order, but if they really want to get me excited they'll make SNES, Genesis, and other console games downloadable via the 3DS' Virtual Console. I know it's a long shot, but playing Super Metroid or Ristar on the handheld would be awesome.
