UPDATE: 3DS Earns Nintendo's Best Day-One Handheld Sales

UPDATE: A quick correction - the Nintendo 3DS broke Nintendo's previous records for best first-day sales, not best-selling handheld.

ORIGINAL STORY:Nintendo revealed today that the 3DS is the company's best-selling handheld ever, but is being very coy about further details. The specifics will be revealed further down the road.

"More details about U.S. sales numbers will be made public on April 14, when first-week U.S. sales figures will be tallied by the independent NPD Group," said a Nintendo rep. "Nintendo worked hard to get as much product as possible to retailers on day one to meet demand, and we will continue with these efforts moving forward."

Congratulations to Nintendo for surpassing its old records!

  • I'm very satisfied with it. But I know in half a year to a year they will have new colors and a bigger screen.

  • Now if only the system had some good games...
  • What do they mean best selling handheld ever? Maybe best handheld launch ever, I just don't see how this thing sold more units through the launch than the total amount of DS's sold over the last few years.
  • good for nintendo. they brought something new to gaming and are getting rewarded for that. also im very happy that they sent enough for everyone who wanted one, not enough companies do that with new consoles.

  • So, Nintendo is just going to completely ignore the NPD. lol Honestly, I've stopped paying attention to NPD numbers because they only account for store sales. Ignoring online sales is just irresponsible of them.
  • This is a great system.  If you're a nintendo fan, then this is a must have purchase.  But if you want to wait for better games or the price to go down then go right ahead.  Either way, this is a great purchase.  Can't wait for developers to really go in and show what this thing can do.

  • I never doubted it. Imagine how high the sales are gonna shoot when all of their big first party games come out like Ocarina, Mario, etc.

  • I checked it out at the store. One f the kids behind the EB counter had one. Within 3 minutes, my head was pounding. I mean, like a hammer was hitting me above the right eye mercilessly. I turned off the 3D, which is easy and doesn't interrupt the game. After that, it was like I was playing a PSP with a lower resolution screen.

I tried Rayman 3DS, which doesn't use the touch screen in any way. Neither do a lot of the other 3DS launch games according to what he said. If they don't use the touch screen, then all you essentially have is a weaker PSP. And if the 3D gives you a massive headache like it did for me, then you will have to play with it off. Which isn't a bad thing since it will double the 3 hour battery life.

Overall if felt well made and higher quality than Nintendo's other handhelds. The 3D was cool, but essentially useless. You will get bored of it quickly if it doesn't give you a headache first. However, you don't buy a Nintendo handheld for the gimmicks, you buy it for the first party software. A new, full 3D Mario game?? Yes please!
  • i seriously know no-one who bought one..
  • You telling me that in less than a week the 3DS has sold better than the DS, GBA or GB? I find that hard to believe. But congrats either way Nintendo!
  • yeah yeah yeah... there's not even a base of comparison, best launch ever, or over all units sold. pretty broad statement. they are just trying to trump it up so people jump on the band wagon and buy a system with no good games yet. like the kinect, which i am guilty of buying.
  • yay!

    the sky is the limit!

  • This obviously means it broke launch sale records, as it couldn't possibly have sold over 100 million DS's in such a short time lol.

  • Outpacing the DS?! Nintendo's doin it big lol.

  • Still need to get one myself.  However, this news article was inevitable, lol.

  • Until it outsells the PS2 and the Nintendo DS, that's a false statement. It should be "fastest selling".
  • Not surprised one bit.

  • If it wasn't 250 bucks i'd buy one but.. I don't know if i'll be able to resist when the new Starfox and RE: Mercenaries comes out.. Ive been dying to get my hands on a legit Starfox game since Adventures for the gamecube!
  • Same Device with 3D. Same Games with 3D Nintendo makes suckers out of consumers yet again. Not sipping the Mario Kool-aid.
  • Wow. I still want one, but still can't afford it. :'(
