NPD: Don't Give the Media Our Numbers!

by Matthew Kato on Mar 28, 2011 at 04:15 AM

The NPD Group, industry sales trackers, are telling video game analysts not to release proprietary figures to media outlets.

For years the NPD Group has made headlines with its monthly sales figures outlining the top 10 and sometimes top 20 video games by sales in the U.S. Recently, however, the presentation of those figures by the NPD has changed. Late last year, the NPD stopped reporting sales figures for individual titles and ceased giving out hardware sales numbers.

This shouldn't come as a surprise given that the NPD makes its money via its figures, and anybody who sees those numbers without paying from them is slipping through the cracks. Moreover, you have to wonder if there was any pressure from publishers and developers given that they likely don't want anyone to know that their latest triple-A title or console didn't sell for crap.
