Pachter: Xbox Over PS3 Again In 2011

by Adam Biessener on Mar 23, 2011 at 08:10 AM

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter sees Microsoft's platform maintaining its lead over Sony's through 2011.

Speaking with IndustryGamers, Pachter declared the $200 price point the magic number that Sony has to hit to jump-start its market share. Microsoft already offers a hard drive-less Xbox 360 slim model for $199 new, while that same system bundled with a Kinect peripheral matches the cheapest $250 PS3 price point.

"I doubt that many hard core gamers have held off purchasing a PS3 while they waited for Killzone 3 to come out," he told the publication. "At this point in the cycle, the only people who have waited are those who planned to buy a console at a price point under $200, and while I think that there are a lot of those people, pricing remains stubbornly high."

Pachter also believes that The Old Republic's fortunes depend primarily on the game's quality, that THQ made a bad gamble with Homefront, and that Nintendo's handheld business has a huge challenge on its hands from the mobile and social sectors. No surprises here, but the reasons Pachter gives for his positions seem sound.

What do you think it's going to take for Sony to overtake Microsoft?
