Steam Guard System Is Up And Running

Valve's Gabe Newell made news during GDC when he goaded viewers to take his Steam password and try to access his account. The bold display was intended to draw attention to a new feature of the downloadable game client, Steam Guard.

The system takes advantage of Intel’s Identity Protection Technology to secure Steam users against phishing and hacking by authorizing the use of specific computers.

According to an official update, the system has graduated from beta and is now available for general use. All that is required to take advantage of the tech is a verified e-mail address and update.

  • This is nice. Personally, I've never had trouble with my steam account being hacked at all, just WoW :(

  • Gabe Newell must be either bold or crazy to put his password out to the public like that to test this system out.
  • Yeesh, how much would that suck to have your Steam hacked and lost... like someone breaking in and swiping your disc collection. Any additional security on that front is welcome.

  • I'm definitely installing this.

  • Pretty cool. I love steam it is such a great service. Hopefully it stays free forever!

  • I thought it said that it didn't take advantage of Intel's Identity Protection, but that it might in the future?

  • Sick, I will download this when I get home. I'm guessing it just links your mac address to the steam client or something?

  • After he supplied his password, I bet he changed his steam password like 5 mins later lol.

  • Hopefully this system works well.

  • And why hasn't this been done before? It seems like a pretty simple solution to a problem most programs have that require a username and password.

  • The additional security is a great peace of mind feature.

  • Yes!! That's good!!

  • I have to say, I'm immensely impressed that Gabe Newell's account hasn't been hacked yet.

  • oh i've got to do this

  • My Mac is too slow for Steam.    •)v(•

  • Go Intel!
