Ubisoft Decides To Enter The Music Game Genre With Rocksmith

by Jeff Cork on Mar 15, 2011 at 03:38 AM

Even though the lights are on and people are stacking chairs, Ubisoft has decided to show up for the music-game party. The company has announced a new game, Rocksmith, that will cater to people interested in learning how to play the guitar.

Ubisoft's senior VP of marketing, Tony Key, bristled when the Hollywood Reporter made the obvious comparisons to previous franchises such as Guitar Hero. "Guitar Hero is a party game. Rocksmith is a music experience," was his reply.

Key seems to think that being able to play a real instrument is a killer hook for the series, seemingly oblivious to the fact that Rock Band 3 introduced the same functionality, along with Power Gig: Rise of the Six String. "We will create a new generation of guitar players," Key says.

The tracklist is largely still a mystery, though Ubisoft is saying that the game will ship with about 45 songs this September, including tracks from the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Nirvana, and the Animals.

Good luck, Ubisoft.
