More Layoffs at the Wonderful World of Disney

by Matthew Kato on Mar 15, 2011 at 04:08 AM

There was a time when Disney had big plans for the console video game space. Epic Mickey was on the horizon, and games like Split/Second and Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned showed that the publisher had some good ideas. Now, however, the company is shifting its focus to casual and social games, leaving nothing but layoffs in its wake.

According to a report by PaidContent.org, this recent round of layoffs encompassed around 80 people on the online side, which Disney said were "targeted." Very true.

Disney has been shaking things up in pursuit of its new casual gaming goals. Earlier this year Propoganda was shut down, the promising-looking Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned was canceled, and a executive re-organization of the entire gaming division (which is presumably a precursor to the unit's shift in priority).
