Kaz Hirai's Ascension At Sony Continues

by Matthew Kato on Mar 10, 2011 at 02:32 AM

Kaz Hirai's enthusiasm for Ridge Racer and all things Sony hasn't gone unnoticed by the bigwigs upstairs. Hirai has been promoted, and is in line for Sony's CEO spot.

In a slightly strange public audition/reality show premise, Hirai has been given the title of executive deputy president to go along with his current position of president of Sony Computer Entertainment. This is part of a re-alignment whereby the company will be split into two divisions. One is focused on consumer products and services led by Hirai, and the other is geared towards components like semi-conductors and batteries headed by Hirai's competition for the top spot, Hiroshi Yoshioka.

All this is serving as a try-out to see which of the two men will succeed current CEO and head honcho Howard Stringer. "The board and I have talked about succession planning," said Stringer at a press conference, "and this is the first step. We have not made a final decision. This is an opportunity for the board to watch Hirai-san and judge his performance."

Stringer also praised Yoshioka, saying, "Yoshioka-san has an opportunity to make a lot of money in his group, so the race isn't over."

It's unknown how long this audition for Stringer's job will continue.

This isn't the only executive shuffling going on over at Sony, yesterday Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing, left the company.
