Guinness: Kinect Is Fastest Selling Consumer Electronics Device

by Jeff Marchiafava on Mar 09, 2011 at 08:54 AM

Today Guinness World Records announced that Microsoft's new Kinect peripheral is the fastest selling consumer electronics device of all time. So, how many units has Microsoft sold, and how fast did the company sell them?

In the first 60 days that it was on sale (Nov. 4 to Jan. 3), 8 million Kinects were sold, at an average of 133,333 units per day. Since January, Microsoft has sold another 2+ million units, breaking the 10 million milestone.

Microsoft is also touting standalone Kinect game sales, which have also surpassed 10 million in sales. However, we're still skeptical of the second generation of games: Aside from Avatar Kinect and support for Netflix and Hulu Plus, Microsoft is only boasting a handful of upcoming games: Body and Brain Connection, Michael Jackson The Experience (check out our Wii review here), The Gunstringer, Kung Fu Panda 2, Carnival Games: Monkey See, Monkey Do, and Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster. Will those games be enough to appease the hordes of new Kinect owners? Only time will tell.
