Warner Bros. Adding Movie Rentals To Facebook

Facebook is already becoming a destination for developers looking to get into the social-media game, and it looks as though movie distributors are muscling their way onto the site as well. Warner Bros. today announced that it will be offering movie rentals and purchases through Facebook, starting with today's release of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight.

After "liking" the movie's Facebook page, users can spend 30 Facebook Credits ($3) for a 48-hour rental. Warner says that more movies will be coming for rental and purchase in the coming months.

“Facebook has become a daily destination for hundreds of millions of people,” saysThomas Gewecke, president of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution.  “Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts.  It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world’s largest social network.”

Feel free to complain and gripe about Facebook all you want, but at this point companies ignore it at their own peril.

  • ***...this thing called Facebook is getting kind of big.
  • TDK is the perfect choice for the first Facebook movie rental.

  • That's pretty damned good business right there. Kudos to WB, they're starting something big here.

  • Good choice for the first movie but.... who at this point doesn't either own TDK or know someone that does because I feel like just about everyone I know has this movie
  • I hate facebook. Why cant we just get over this and get the internet back to normal.
  • This sounds like a solid business decision to me.  Even though there are what seems to be an infinite number of ways to rent/buy/watch movies these days, Facebook is a great way of reaching huge numbers of people in one spot where they are going everyday anyway.

  • *shrug* No one I know personally uses Facebook for anything more than simple status sharing...

  • I'm going to continue with Netflix or Redbox, thanks though facebook.
  • Thats not a bad idea. Thumbs up to WB. But I can rent movies next to my house for $1.50.

  • sorry, imma stick with Netflix and leave my FB page to what it was meant for; talking to friends.

  • Facebook is stupid and everyone should quit, but aside from that, this is kinda cool.

  • i got to say, this is actually pretty smart. however, facebook seems cheap, and i probably wont rent my movies this way

  • Cool

  • That actually surprises me, it seems like facebook is becoming a one stop place for everything.

  • Sweet, this sounds rad.  Screw you, iTunes and your bloated prices.

  • That's what Netflix is for

  • Yay Facebook! Worth while for sure.
