Crystal Dynamics Announces New Tomb Raider Film

Crystal Dynamics and GK Films announced today that the larger Tomb Raider brand reboot will encompass a new feature film. GK Films (The Town, The Tourist, Rango) has acquired the rights from Square Enix to translate Tomb Raider for the big-screen, and is aiming for a 2013 release for “the first film.”

The movie will be produced by Graham King and Tim Headington and “create daring new adventures for the young and dynamic Lara Croft.”

“We are very excited to be rebooting what is already a hugely successful film franchise and continuing the Tomb Raider phenomenon,” said King.

Paramount Pictures released two previous Tomb Raider movies, both starring Academy Award-winning Angelina Jolie. The 2001 and 2003 films grossed $432 million worldwide. A lead actress has not been attached to the film as of yet.

    She's certainly not British, but Michelle Rodriguez looks the most like the new Lara Croft. In every movie I've seen her in, she's always played the rough, daring female role which makes this seem too perfect.

    I'm hoping someone relatively new. There really isn't an actress that comes to mind. I say with a new start to the Tomb Raider series should be a new face.

    Dude, Michelle Rodriguez WOULD be perfect for the role.. Maybe. She definitely looks perfect for the role, I don't know if she has the voice though. Having Lara Croft sound like Michelle Rodriguez would be weird.. I wouldn't mind Mila Kunis is a sweaty *** either. I feel like some kind of pervert now. :D

    sounds pretty good...just hope it doesnt bomb like the other movies. as for the role of Lara Croft...someone who has 34 DD =)

    Yvonne Strahovski!!! I'd really rather have a continuation with Angelina Jolie, but for a reboot, Yvonne Strahovski!

    Though still not sure about the new game. It may be the first TR title I've passed on since the original.

    If it's a young Lara Croft I'd liked to see Meagan Fox in it since every one basically sees her as little Angelina anyway plus she's super Hott so thats a plus.

    I actually think that Michelle Rodriguez is a horrible call for the role. After reading the feature in the magazine, it sounds like Crystal Dynamics is changing the character from a rough-and-tumble, plays for sport, thrill seeking kind of girl to one that's more accessible, not exactly sure of herself. Granted, Michelle Rodriguez would have been a good consideration for the old Lara Croft, but for the new one, it should be someone who can portray an essence of vulnerability while at the same time sending across the feeling that she's strong yet not cocky. Malin Akerman comes to mind (played Silk Spectre in "Watchmen"). Michelle Monaghan would be PERFECT...

    I thought Angelina Jolie did a decent job portraying the image of Lara Croft.  But I think the new image they want to create won't work with Angelina Jolie.  As for who should be the next Lara Croft, there are too many choices.  I've read the comments and the readers have left many excellent choices.  All could look like the more realistic woman but I think it will come down to their ability to act the part.
