Guitar Hero May Be Dead, But Its DLC Isn't

Activision made the announcement a couple of weeks ago that their formerly massive franchise Guitar Hero has met its end. However, fans of their plastic instruments will be able to get some more life out of them thanks to a recent announcement. Because of "continued support" from the series' fans, DLC will continue to be made available for both Guitar Hero and DJ Hero.

This is good news for the short term, but we have to wonder how long new DLC will be produced until Activision pulls the plug. With no new games coming out in the series, there's almost certainly going to be a point where it just isn't profitable anymore.

  • I can resist saying this, but GH got "Slashed"...sorry.
  • So I'm guessing DJ Hero 3D is canceled too?
  • My gf loves guitar hero
  • Sounds like good news for the fans, but this missed affecting me by a long shot. a few years since i've played or cared about the series.

  • Though I'm not a big fan of the series anymore, it was truly revolutionary when it first came out and I adored them. Unfortunately, just like any other fad, they fell by the wayside. The one question that remains for me now is what series activision will focus on, or if they will simply start working on a new IP to make up for the poor sales.
  • Huh, sounds like they're trying to reap the benefits of the new hype. The mall here that's going out is doing the same thing. Stores are closing so they lure customers in with extra stuff.
  • They'll probably support it until fans stop buying the music. It's all about the money.

  • thats good for guituar hero fans...

  • why even bother?

  • AKA an opportunity to milk the last dollars out of its decaying corpse.
  • Maybe instead of not making guitar hero games anymore, they should put it on hold for a while.

  • it would be activision to milk every possible cent they can out of the series

  • I feel like to make the perfect Guitar Hero experience you really need to utilize an almost MMO feel too it. Kinda like how Blizzard treats World of Warcraft, constantly updating the entire experience.
  • This is like beating a dead horse, then giving up, only to come back and beat it some more several weeks later.

  • My Guitar hero days are behind me. I think this DLC decision should have been made a long time ago with GH3. IF this decision had been made and the number of releases been reduced, Guitar hero wouldn't have been canceled and would still be selling.

  • Wait....Didn't they already tell us they would stop supporting DLC by the end of the month, or did I just dream that?
  • Give it a month.
  • Oh, who the Hell cares? The franchise is dead, nobody wants to admit it but that's the truth. A one-time gaming juggernaut has been slain, and no amount of DLC is going to change that!
  • Every hero dies heroically, not by having their boss give them the axe... so therefore..... "Guitar Average U.S. Employee Circa 2007-Present"?

  • Neversoft and Vicarious Visions must be happy to hear this, so their studios can stay open for longer now. But seriously, if I worked at either studio, I'd start looking for jobs now. Activision has made it perfectly clear that you either are Blizzard, or you're working on Call of Duty. They'll shutter anyone else.
