The lights are on
Australia has a long history of banning the sale of mature-rated ESRB games, and now Mortal Kombat is the latest victim.
Warner Bros. has confirmed the ban and released the following statement:
"The highly anticipated video game Mortal Kombat, published by Warner
Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE) in Australia, has been refused
classification by the Australian Classification Board and will not
release in Australia. We are extremely disappointed that Mortal Kombat,
one of the world's oldest and most successful video games franchises,
will not be available to mature Australian gamers. WBIE would not market
mature content where it is not appropriate for the audience. We
understand that not all content is for every audience, but there is an
audience for mature gaming content and it would make more sense to have
the R18+ classification in Australia. As a member of the iGEA
[Interactive Games & Entertainment Association], WBIE is reviewing
all options available at this time."
Warner Bros. could appeal the matter, but given the explicit violence in the game, who knows where it will get them.

They have the internet in Australia don't they? I've seen more sick, twisted and traumatizing stuff on the internet than any game has even come close to. Push an 18+ rating and quit being crybabies.
i guess its a hard live in australia!
Ban, well i didnt realy see that coming, lol
This could become America if the Schwarzenegger v. EMA case goes the wrong way....
Normal Australian Dude = Australia is an awesome place to live
Gaming Australian Dude = GMTFO HERE
Ahahahaha... not really a surprise. They like to bad every game rated "mature". Maybe who choose thinks that his people are a bunch of children. I really can't understand this. I'm curious: can they buy it on Steam?
Classic. Mortal Kombat will sell millions and millions worldwide
For a place that was founded by the rejects and muderers that England booted out, Australia seems to be a little too worried about violent video games.
That is a shame. I have a feeling this game is going to be pure awesomeness.
That sucks wind! Glad I don't live in australia.
Ah, the government pigs strike yet again to ensure that our right to freedom of speech is deprived...
Another game bites the dust
at least Warner bros. is making a blatant statement against the rating system there, more publishers should do this as that is a lot of potential money they are missing out on
I have some WoW teamates that live there. They say they get any banned games by ordering through New Zealand and getting them shipped to them. So I guess there is a loophole
I am happy i don't live there because i would miss out on this great game.
