Mexican Officials Call For Call Of Juarez: The Cartel Ban
Mexican officials are calling for a ban on Ubisoft's upcoming shooter Call of Juarez: The Cartel, saying that the game trivializes the area's very real problems with drug-related murders. The legislative body of Chuhuahua State, where Ciudad Juarez is located, unanimously approved a request to Mexico's Interior Department to keep the game from being released in the country. According to the Associated Press, approximately 6,000 people were killed in Ciudad Juarez in 2009 and 2010.
Call of Juarez: The Cartel shifts the series' timeline from the 1800s to a more contemporary setting, equating the current situation with drug crime to that of a modern-day Wild West.
"It is true there is a serious crime situation, which we are not trying to hide," Ricardo Boone Salmon, a congressman for Chihuahua state, told the AP. "But we also should not expose children to this kind of scenarios so that they are going to grow up with this kind of image and lack of values."
Ubisoft could not be reached for comment.
