PS3 Hackers Can Now Unban Themselves

Sony and the PS3 hacking community have been engaged in a tug-of-war in recent months, ever since root access to the PlayStation 3 was gained. In addition to opening the door for unauthorized indie development on the console, that breakthrough allowed users to play pirated games and cheat online. Sony responded by threatening to ban players found to have modded their system in this way, which the company says amounts to a breach in the terms of use agreement. It appears as though that punishment is being bypassed as well, with users claiming to have found a way to circumvent and reverse such bans.

According to Destructoid, hackers can now apparently unban themselves. Even more disturbing, those users can even ban other players, provided they have access to the victim's console ID. As one hacker said last month, "The complete console is compromised – there is no way back."

And if you don't know this by now, don't give anyone access to your PS3's console ID. Seriously.

  • They'll get theirs one day, if not for this then for some more serious dumb *** they do further down the road.
  • Man, this saga will just never end. Sony is probably better off just throwing in the towel. They'll probably lose more money fighting this battle than letting hackers do their thing.
  • I hope they put those low life pirates in jail. Cheating is for cowards.
  • I hope they put those low life pirates in jail. Cheating is for cowards.
  • Those hackers/pirates can also unban deez nuts, this fiasco is directly affecting all the other users like me that just game and enjoy.
  • sony really needs to stop threatening people, and start taking action.
  • Wow this is not good for Sony and the innocent people playing that don't cheat and hack. This really isn't a good thing.
  • This is sad. I hope Sony's legal battle against these hackers is successful. It's really unfortunate that these people have to go and ruin a good thing for everyone else, but hey, who isn't used to it by now? We can't have anything on the planet without someone else coming by and *** it up.
  • Bring down the hammer, *** it! Throw those guys in jail! They are disturbing the peace (or some other piece of legislative crap). I just want to see these guys get their do.
  • Well screwing with other people's machines should create criminal charges, if there aren't any already.

These guys need to find something worthy to do. So many terrible companies out there and they attack gaming consoles. Go work for Anonymous instead.

  • I hat hackers. Sony needs to do something and do it fast.
  • Too bad they dont have some kind of kill code to brick a cheaters unit. Screw banning them just fry their machine. It is what they deserve at this point.
  • Hey let the hackers hack. As long as they don't mess with others, than whats the problem?
  • Who's glad they own a 360? Me.
  • Screwing around with this stuff is only going to make Sony go to extreme measures to protect their copyrighted property. In the end the honest consumer is going to suffer from this the most, which is really *** up (excuse my language). I am going to cheer Sony on the day they catch these nefarious individuals because I doubt they have the money to fight a legal battle that will be coming their way. The hackers will get theirs in the end, if I've learned anything from the internet its that NO ONE IS ANONYMOUS. If they search hard enough they will find you. The more these jerks keep doing these things, the tougher Sony's resolve to catch them will be.
  • They have the ability to ban other players? That's completely messed up. What are gamers who aren't hacking the system supposed to do if they get screwed over by a hacker?
  • I thought all these big companies were suppose to have a team of their own hackers to stop things like this from happening
  • I'm surprised! A GI PS3 hacking article that isn't full of misinformation! However, I would like to elaborate on the Console ID (its called psid, so I'm going to call it that). First off, from what I can tell, Sony has yet to do a console ban. I don't know for sure, as my account only got a warning, and I'm too lazy to setup the bypass method to get on PSN from 3.55. But, should Sony start doing console bans, this could in theory un ban people. However, this is assuming Sony doesn't authenticate psids. It'd be incredibly stupid for them not to, but it wouldn't be too far fetchd really, sony may npt have a list of the psids of every console made. Now, if Sony DOES authenticate, you'll have to use someone elses psid.Which could possibly get it banned. Now how does one get your consoles psid? Its surprisingly easy. Your PS3 sends it out to Sony on boot (along with a lot of other information that it really shouldn't be, but thats another story). Now, depending on how your PS3 is connected, someone else on your network could intercept that data (This is how the current bypass works, sort of.). Really, only need to worry if you're stealing wifi from a neighbor. But if you're neighbor isn't smart enough to protect their wifi, I doubt they'll be smart enough to trap packets, so in reality, you're probably safe.
  • I cannot imagine sitting in my mom's basement doing this all day. Get a life, hackers! I don't have a problem with hacking that doesn't affect anyone else, but this just sickens me! 'Rage Mode - Activated'
  • Sony should put out games with viruses. Anyone who hacks it in any type of way will have their cicuit board and chips fried.
