Sustaining A Legacy: The Battlefield Strategy

Battlefield 3 is in good hands. Lars Gustavsson has been with the series since its inception, and after serving as the creative director for several titles he's jumping back into the fray as Battlefield 3's lead multiplayer designer. We sat down and spoke with him about his love for, and the philosophy behind, the development of the Battlefield series. Watch the first video to hear Gustavsson talk about DICE's team structure for Battlefield 3, as well as how he got his start in the industry.

Check out the video below to hear Gustavsson reminisce about the history of Battlefield and reveal how DICE's passion and organization keeps the series from getting stale.

  • I'm gonna go ahead and say it. I think this game will actually be the Call of Duty Killer. Yes people will always play CoD, but this year Battlefield will take away the top position.
  • Vehicles were always the main difference von Battlefield and other military shooters. I hope the'll keep the focus and don't go the other way. I hope for improvement in physics and mapdesign.
  • Did he compare fruit to trains?  CLASSIC!  Good to see the some of the original crew is still there.

  • Really cool, I love these kind of interviews.

  • This year... Battlefield srikes back :D
  • Battlefield has always been good on the visual, and realistic level. You snipe someone and you actually have to aim a little above the head. in CoD you aim at the head and you get the head. I have high hopes for the game. Dont fail me now.
  • i think i should be pumped for this game

  • I think that I may nuy this game instead of Modern Warfare 3. But I will definetly buy Skyrim, Mass Effect 3 and Batman Arkham City.

  • A mounted rocket launcher on the railing?

    xD Awesome.

  • Battlefield 3 will melt your face...

  • there's actually a much more in depth history of DICE on youtube called "All your History" series and a season about DICE
  • I'm loving these interviews and BF's history lessons lol.

  • DICE seems like a very determined developer. Battlefield 3 looks awesome, by the way.

  • those were some very promising words.. definitely things I like to hear a developer say... I can't wait for this game and I know it is going to be remarkable.

  • @ 3:33 on the History of Battlefield vid, You can see the MH-6 little bird heli in the background on the glass. It'd be cool to see that in BF3!
  • I just wanna point out that DICE and EA got the top 2 floors in Stockholms pretty much only new building. I'm just saying, there's a reason. Still BF3 it going to be a CoD killer. BF has always been better but MW3 got nothing on this :D
  • I don't get why 1942 was awesome and Bad Company 2 sucked.
  • This guy seems awesome. His passion for the Battlefield franchise is apparent and makes me feel confident BF3 will be awesome.

  • If they can sit down and focus on one thing and perfect it these guys could beat COD....but they tend to spread themselves thin. Yet they have 4 times as many people as usual...this game might just kill COD unless COD gets a destructible environment and way bigger levels and the last probably won't happen. It will be interesting to see what happens between these two games in the next few years. Hell watch these two will war and then the next fad will be something way different and they will both be like D****T

  • After reading the full article in this months mag I am really looking forward to getting my hands on this game.
