Fired Employee Says Bungie's Next Project Is An MMO

Today, Kotaku published some quotes by an anonymous source who claimed to have been recently let go from Bungie. The source claimed that 30 employees were fired from Bungie for was was said to be "performance related" reason. However, the source also said that an inter-office email revealed that the real reason for the firing were Activision's concerns over "project sensitivity" and budgetary matters. All the employees let go were contractors, not full-time Bungie staffers.

The source also said that Bungie's next project is named Destiny, but currently being worked on under the codename "Tiger." It is said to mix the FPS and MMO genres in an online, sci-fi shooter.

Later in the day, Bungie released a statement denying the reports, and linking to job posting that indicate that the company is actually hiring new positions, not conducting layoffs. The statement did not mention the rumored FPS/MMO project.

  • An MMO could be cool...
  • Since Activision cannot order the firings of employees since, well, the dont own Bungie, they only publish their games now, Im calling BS, especially since Bungie personally denied it. Interesting that they dont mention the new game in their official statement though.....
  • Whamo! We have a winner folks!

  • Hmmm, interesting.  I guess we'll just have to see how this pans out.

  • if it's an MMO, i will pass. i simply do not like MMOs.
  • As much as I wish it wasn't true, I believe it.
  • Let the Activision hate begin!
  • I seriously doubt the validity of that claim.

  • I not really into MMOs but I still am willing to try anything. As a fan of Bungie, no doubt will I buy it and it will probably be better than Halo...Or just as good.

  • Booooo.

  • I'm not much of a Halo fan, but I'm curious...

  • I was recently fired from there too....and EA, and Bethesda, and Valve. All four companies are combining to create a MMORPGFPS racing game based on Barbie and Iron Man. It's called Abraham Lincoln......I'm calling shenanigans on this story.
  • Gah! I wish companies like Bioware and Bungie would just stick to regular games. Not a big fan of MMOs...

  • If it smells like BS...

Seriously. I think this guy is trying to hop on the activision hate train and ride it to a lawsuit. Sounds like a pile of crap to me.

  • How can Activision tell Bungie to fire someone?, I thought Bungie was now an independent company? Also, If its true about Bungie making an MMO. F**K.
  • Dislike.

  • I would think that as an independent contractor who was hoping for more work I would not broadcast information that is protected under a NDA. Sure, the tip may have been anonymous, but if the story is even half-true odds are Bungie knows who the tipster was and when said tipster goes looking for more work he, or she (or they), won't receive a very good recommendation.

I wouldn't doubt that perhaps this individual was let go since Bungie goes to great pains to indicate that they are not experiencing "layoffs or group firings". Letting one or two contractors go is not uncommon. Business is business.
  • I cant help but hate Activision.
  • Payback can be hilarious.
