The lights are on
Since the PS3's root keys were distributed online, Sony's worst fears have come true – the system's security measures have been circumvented, and pirated copies of games like Killzone 3 have appeared online.
The company is already trying to fight back against the original hackers responsible in the courts, but now it is warning that PS3 users who run pirated software will have their PSN and Qriocity (its music and movie streaming service) accounts banned.
Here is the statement from Sony in full:
Notice: Unauthorized circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers. These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the “System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System” and the “Terms of Services and User Agreement” for the PlayStation Network/Qriocity and its Community Code of Conduct provisions. Violation of the System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws. Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently. To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.

Dont give any of the hackers a warning Sony, ban their butts for good. Then they'll know from their mistakes.
Let's think about this in detail-
You pretty much need PSN access to do anything that the majority of gamers do-collect trophies, play demos, play trailers, use the Playstation Store, use NetFlix, etc. unless all that you're doing is playing a game and saving it.
You also need to update your system, which you can only do with an account, or via new game discs, which you're not utilizing if your pirating them.
I'm sure i'm missing alot here, but not being allowed to have a PSN account would send me back to the last generation, as internet access on my PS3 has completely and utterly changed the way i play a videogame. I, personally, wouldn't put that in jeopardy.
Sony doing this is fantastic.
It's a serious issue and the consequences just became serious too.
If you are involved in piracy, you deserve this. (Because Sony cannot come to your doorstep and repo your PS3, and replace it with a 360)
Sony is doing the right thing here. Without PSN access the PS3 is pretty much worthless. I hope this is not just words and that Sony does take immediate action if they catch anyone in violation. Good job Sony!
ok sony again.. leave us do whatever we want. first u charge us a lot of money. charge us to fix it and then charge us for doin whatever i want with what i paid for!? i'll do whatever the hell i want with my system. jump off! i'll get rid of my account to play pirated games. save me some money and do something more productive. just like the 360 i'm getting i'll hack that too. sony, you are full of it!
i get banned and no online for me? oh well. i don't play online games anyway. sony is stealing from us anyway when they put old ps2 games on the ps3 and make it "high def". we are paying more for the same game. they are just mad that the ps2 is still relevent and the ps3 is not as hot. i see u sony!!! U R NOT trapping me with this
is there really that large a number of people that do this kind of stuff
That's not enough. Just go arrest the creators of homebrew and the original hackers that got the root key
and when reported for mods, sony does nothing to the cheaters or thieves...they refer you to law enforcement or the game developer while the developer refers you to sony...it's all a big run around joke with the paying customer as teh victim every time. Why have stats when you allow mods? Why does activision do nothing while still charging full prices for hacked games? both are *** companies... and now this was sent to sony today: If you are so concerned about use terms and protecting your customer base, why do you allow so many illegal mods or modifications or scripts to be run on your network? Why do you refer players reporting such to Activision when their form is a link to yours? This is the run around for your paying customers. How about I submit an independent article to GameInformer magazine, USA Today and a few other media outlets describing the issue in order to shed light on this and help you get it right for a change? I have encountered no less than 40 such player in less than 2 days of gaming. They claim you can't ban them and I believe it and am reporting such. My identity was already affected by your recent failures and I am very disappointed that honest players have no recourse and that you, as a group of PEOPLE have decided to take such a corporate course of action - or non-action really. I can provide a list of many players using mods that include scripts designed to rip user names and passwords thus promoting identity theft. In fact I have been trying to for some months now with no response from you. Now I am reporting all my efforts to the media as you seem to not care about your paying base. Given your recent history this should glean attention. I have all my emails sent to you...63, along with the user names and gamer tags of those involved. You as a group of people do nothing to stop this and by proxy encourage this activity. I j am forwarding to CNN, MSNBC, ABC, along with several respected gamer outlets and publishers in order to protect myself from your backlash - pick on the honest gamer reporting and you will look like the villain. If you actually care...email me and ask for my list of illegal mods being run and I'll forward it and track your response and actions accordingly. If you don't care do what you will with my acct or don't. Suspend my system or my account for confronting you and holding you accountable for your actions and I'll dump my system on ebay along with all my ps3 games. The current state of your network is simply an identity theft risk every time every player logs on as these scripts run within the games and you make no attempt to stop it from what I have tracked through your own communications for over five months now. How will you defend your own statements and customer blow offs? I really am curious. How about this...contact me and I'll cooperate with you in full, provide what me and six of my friends have been tracking for some time...including offender gamer tags and the scripts they run. How do I know what is in the scripts?...I always try to get them to my pc where I can pull them apart while pretending to be interesting in running them myself (I have never run a script though my stats have been a victim and identity have been victimized)- Hewlett Packard RnD for 24 years baby...I know what I am doing and claiming and have evidence to back it. Just address the issue and clean up your cheaters by removing them. It's what you've been promising all along anyway. I also have a long list of folks sharing log on info in order to illegally download content after a single person pays for it...isn't that stealing from you and the game developer and yet it continues? How are you so obtuse then? Get it right or at least admit you intend to do nothing. If people like you worked for me you'd be unemployed. email forwarded to media...balls in your court...I fear not your ban hammer as the media will play with that all day long! You may want to meet my spouse...a journalist for a national media outlet, you'll get her info when I see how you reply. Accountability folks...about time you got some. And for the record I don't hate you...I hate your lack of accountability and true support for such issues. You should feel ashamed.
