Shenmue Creator Honored With GDC Pioneer Award

Sega’s Yu Suzuki has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 GDC Pioneer Award. Considered one of the top industry honors, the Game Developers Choice Pioneer Award is aimed at showcasing individuals responsible for breakthrough technology or design that changed the landscape gaming. Last year Valve’s Gabe Newell took home the award.

Still with Sega as a special advisor, Suzuki first joined the company in 1983, and is best known as the creator of many acclaimed games/franchises including Virtua Fighter and Shenmue. In his time at Sega Suzuki has been credited with the creation of over two dozen titles.

Suzuki will be on hand to accept the award at the 11th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards on March 2. Peter Molyneux will also be honored that evening with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

We’ll be on hand to report on all the events the evening.

So he'll be getting this for his older work, not something he did last year?

BTW, why won't they just release a hd collection of the current shenmues, I kind of want to see what the fuss is about.

I just wish they'd announce Shenmue 3 already! If Shenmue 2's ending wasn't such a cliffhanger I wouldn't even be bothered if they never make a third installment but nooo they just had to leave it like that! *facedesk*

Wait, the Fable guy gets a lifetime achievement award? Did he do something cool before fable, or ever for that matter? Fable wasn't that great. Also, I think they need to hold off on doing lifetime achievement awards for probably another 30 years, wait til these dev's have actually had a lifetime of work.

Congrats to Suzuki on the award. Now give us some concrete details on if and when Shenmue 3 will be released!! Been waiting to finish the trilogy going on ten years now.

Shenmue is one of the best games I have ever played. It's graphics blew away every other game of it's time. The story is incredible. Only thing that drove me crazy was the motorcycle controls. I couldn't get the hang of it for the life of me. They need to re-release the games on the 360. PWETTY PLEASE!!!
