No More Guitar Hero/DJ Hero DLC

Activision will drop new downloadable support for its music games in just a few weeks, only a few months after the release of the latest installment.

In a FAQ posted to the DJ Hero website, Activision has revealed plans to discontinue releasing DLC for its Guitar Hero and DJ Hero games after February. That means no new songs for Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, or DJ Hero 2. The move comes amid what appears to be the complete shutdown of Activision's music game production. "Over the past two years, we have seen rapid declines in the music genre, and unfortunately, based on current demand, we simply cannot continue to profitably make these games given the considerable licensing and manufacturing costs," the FAQ states.

The statement goes on to say that existing DLC tracks and mixes will continue to be supported by the company.

  • F*** you Activision (yeah I'm looking at you Bobby)!!!
  • I'm just glad I won't have to scroll through 40 billion band game DLC new releases to see if there's anything in which I'm actually interested. Now I'll only have to scroll through 20 billion Rock Band new releases.
  • That's what Activision gets for milking it's franchises dry! They shouldn't have released a new Guitar Hero game every year, and now people are out of jobs. Bobby is still smiling though cuz his job is safe. Wipe that goofy smile off your face
  • If they didn't flood the world with Guitar hero so quickly I think they could have rode the wave a lot longer and made more money on each, they got greedy and self destructed,... sucks, but I'm sure it's not the end of the music genre, just the settling of it. And we all know activision doesn't do "okay" sales, if it isn't record  breaking they don't want it

  • Guitar Hero's DLC always seemed to pale in comparison to Rock Band's weekly DLC, (sure, there were some gems, but the majority... meh) so maybe this is actually a good thing for them? Except for the folks out of the job, of course.
  • Stopped enjoying these GH games after 3, so no loss to me. I do hope those guys losing their jobs can find work somewhere else. Maybe not having a yearly deadline, they will have a chance to make a quality product.

  • Just another reason why Activision is absolute fail and I will not support the company with a single purchase until they restructure their management.

If you make a game, stand behind it.  If you don't stand behind it, you are in the wrong business.

  • Still, you would think over-saturation would bring any series down, but it seems to be working for the Call of Duty series while it drove the music game genre into the ground. I'd say Call of Duty is the anomaly in this instance, but it still is strange.
  • The irony about how Activision poses a stance of supporting investors over product quality is really mind boggling. Quality in the end is always cheaper and more profitable than whoring out titles, just look at Apple, and I don't know Blizzard maybe? When the two companies merged the only company that had to cut overlapping employees seemed to be mostly just Activision, I don't recall ever reading about Blizzard having massive layoffs, and they always make great products, hmmmm.
  • This is too bad...
  • It sucks for the people losing their jobs, but how can a company go ahead and produce the same product with minor tweaks each year and not see this coming? Sure it works for sports games, but that's a constantly changing environment in general. Wasn't Activision the company behind the Tony Hawk games? Did they not learn from the past? Just wait until they kill the Call of Duty series...
  • My kids are gonna be devastated when I tell them. I may have to sit them down like when revealing the death of a relative.

  • I could care less... Haven't bought a music based game since Guitar Hero 4.

  • Seems like the ridiculously large amount of Guitar Hero games has finally caught up with them. They should have released a new one every two or, preferably, three years. It's a shame DJ Hero has to suffer because of that as well though. I rather enjoyed the second one.

  • next up? call of duty getting canned forever. activision management is like a jedi council of douchebags.
  • Bobby Kotick...you evil man -_-

if they didn't just FLOOD the world with about 50 new games each freaking year then they wouldn't have to make so many people jobless and kill a franchise every 3 years.

they dont care about the fans. just their greed for money. activision is hell on earth for us gamers

  • From a business perspective I understand why this was done to of course save money where money is being lost. However, I wonder if the employees knew their departments were going to be shut down. If they did not then Activision really screwed up. All I know is that my faith in them is shaken and the last year has been full of errors on Activision's part. EA doesn't seem to be doing this kind of stuff; Activision could learn a thing or two from them.

  • this seems like it could be the straw that breaks the camels back. for all the milkin Activision did with GH it seems the next in line is COD cuz they pretty much do the same. thats sad cuz I was lookin forward to some GH DJ Hero DLC but now we wont get any quality just a quick cash in. looks to me Activision is at the end of its rope better restructure or else I see more than just layoffs!

  • I honestly don't follow either of these franchises... but it reminds me of the bad vibes around Harmonix right now :(

  • That really sucks. I was hoping to see more good DLC for GH and DJ Hero. I blame Bobby Kotik for this, he's only in life for the money. The same business practice is going to destroy CoD.

At the same time, I don't think it would be very long before Rock Band goes down as well, seeing as Harmonix is having a hard time at the moment.
