Colbert Talks Games With Advocate Jane McGonigal

by Jeff Cork on Feb 04, 2011 at 10:51 AM

Jane McGonigal was the guest on Comedy Central's Colbert Report, where the games researcher and author of Reality is Broken talked about the benefits of gaming. She trotted out some interesting facts, such as how playing games for as little as 90 seconds has a positive effect on a person's confidence for 24 hours. In turn, Stephen Colbert played the part of the bewildered skeptic.

McGonigal, whose work has included the influential Halo 2 alternate reality game I Love Bees, says she is hoping to see people across the globe spend 21 billion hours per week playing games. That would require an increase from 500 million gamers worldwide to 3 billion, and those players would have to commit to playing an hour a day. It sounds far-fetched, but just imagine what all of those confident people could do.
