Sony Reaping Rewards of PS3 Software & Production Costs

by Matthew Kato on Feb 03, 2011 at 03:30 AM

Sony reports that it has sold 6.3 million PS3 units, 57.6 million PS3 games, and even 16.5 million PSP titles in the last quarter (ending December 31) to bank a profit of $564 million during that time.

The numbers are also bolstered by the fact that PS3 hardware manufacturing costs are down and that the PS2 still sold 5.3 million units of software.

Despite the good news, PS3's 6.3 million units during the quarter is down slightly from the 6.5 million it notched this time last year. However, the console has sold better this overall financial year (15 million) as compared to the last (13 million).

On the software side, PS3 software sales have increased a full 10 million, while PSP's also rose a more modest 1.5 million for a quarterly total of 16.5 million. Sony says the PSP hardware sold 8 million for the entire year.
