Sony Peels Back The Curtain On PSone Classics

by Jeff Cork on Feb 02, 2011 at 03:06 AM

Sony has been releasing a steady stream of old-school PlayStation games on the PlayStation Network for some time now, and it seems as though users have had a lot of questions about the process. A post on the PlayStation Blog addresses some of those questions, delving into the technical, logistical, and legal complications that arise when attempting to resuscitate older games for new audiences.

Ross McGrath, from the PlayStation Store Team, explains the process of bringing the games back, including two typical problems. First, it's sometimes difficult for games to pass through legal clearance, considering that original licenseholders may have gone out of business and contracts generally have expired. The second issue is that emulation isn't always perfect, and some of the games don't make it through the process cleanly. McGrath highlights some of the technical issues he and the QA department has seen, including upside-down text and games that steadily run slower as time passes.

If you like reading up on behind-the-scenes stuff or are just interested in learning more about how PSone games make the transition to the PSN, give the post a read.
