NBA 2K11 Slam Dunks Nearly Four Million In Sales

2K Sports and Visual Concepts found a new recipe for raking in cash money: Build around the greatest basketball player of all time, and have your rival bow out of the competition early.

With Michael Jordan gracing the cover of NBA 2K11 and EA Sports canning the NBA Elite disaster, 2K reports its latest hoops game became the fastest selling title in the history of the sports publishing label, dishing nearly 4 million copies worldwide since it took the court this past October.

“This game is special to everyone at 2K Sports,” said president of product development Greg Thomas. “When we first landed Michael Jordan for the cover of NBA 2K11, we knew we had to produce a title worthy enough for the greatest player of all time. The number of accolades and sales milestone prove that we lived up to the challenge to create the greatest hoops game ever developed by 2K Sports. It’s not only a reverent tribute to His Airness, but a love letter to all the basketball fans whose continued support makes this franchise what it is today.”

  • It certainly deserves it. IMO, it's the best basketball game ever made, and easily one of the best sports games of this generation. I'm still having fun playing it.

  • Wow, if it wasn't for the fact that it's a sports game, I might actually care about this game.

  • I'm indirectly responsible for selling 7 of these games; 8 counting myself. I bought this game based upon Bertz's review (I think it was Bertz) of the game and am happy I did. The last basketball game I ever played was NBA Jam at the arcade years ago and I have never bought a basketball game as I am not into b-ball. I am still addicted to this game and anyone can get into this. Jordan challenges, My Player and Create a Legend mode are all equally awesome, though I like the fact that my created player won rookie of the year, MVP and the NBA championship after my team (The Nets) started out an abysmal 13-32. It is extremely deep and fulfilling. Don’t mock it till you try it (stares intently at Decabo).
  • Well, Matt Bertz, I guess it would sell a shitload of copies since its the ONLY real basketball sim. Sure theres nba jams or whatever, but it being the only available current basketball game also makes a lot more people buy it since they essentially get all the sales that the EA nba game would have gotten.

  • Normally, I would go straight for the EA Sports basketball title (NBA Live), but when I saw that the man who headed my Chicago Bulls team to multiple championships (6) was on the cover I had to pick up this title. Plus, with EA not having a b-ball title, this was an easy decision.

I'm enjoying the "My Player" mode & the Jordan Challenges. Although, for most of them I was still pretty young at the time they took place, it's still fun to take control of the game with the one who took control of many a game during his playing days.
  • Basketball with Michael Jordan is pretty awesome.

  • Everyone still loves Jordan

  • It is one of the greatest sports games ever made. Jordan is the GOAT so that attracts some fans that arent into sports sims. It inherited NBA Live's fanbase off the epic fail that was Elite. (Did you play that demo? Boooooo!) It also had a holiday price drop its only $39.99 at this point. If you havent played this youre missing out. It has one of the deepest franchise modes ever. Just sayin.
  • And to think.......it all started with the dreamcast nba2k

  • I initially thought going with Jordan on the cover was a bad move but they definitely delivered with the product.

  • Makes me happy, this game was amazing and deserved having great sales.

  • Will my mavs ever win a fu#$%^& ring
