Demon's Souls Spiritual Successor Now Named Dark Souls

by Phil Kollar on Feb 01, 2011 at 07:03 AM

When developer From Software announced Project Dark last fall, Demon's Souls fans such as myself rejoiced. Although not a direct sequel, this game very much looks like a continuation of the style I fell in love with in Demon's Souls [pictured above]. And now it has a much more closely related name as well.

According to a preview in this week's issue of Famitsu (via NeoGAF), the upcoming Namco Bandai release has changed its title to Dark Souls. As expected, the gameplay will be similar to Demon's Souls, though the world and story are brand new.

Instead of a hub world branching out to separate levels, Dark Souls will feature one large, seamless world with a greater focus on exploration. Like Demon's Souls, the game will have a heavy emphasis on challenge and will feature unique co-op and PvP multiplayer, messages left in the environments by other players, and the ability to view ghosts of other players who have died in the area you're in.

I'm glad we're finally starting to get more information on this exciting project. It's a bummer that From Software couldn't do a direct continuation of Demon's Souls, but I'm already psyched to hear how they build on that formula.
