Nintendo Reports Wii Rebound

Even though industry-wide console numbers were down, Nintendo is happy the Wii has sold relatively well during the holiday season.

The rebound is thanks in some part to the limited-edition red Wii bundle released in early November, which helped bolster Wii sales numbers across the world. Nintendo Wii sales were over seven million units in America, and although 2010 was on par with 2008, it wasn't as good as the system's heyday in 2009.

It wasn't all great news, however, as even Nintendo president Satoru Iwata admitted that DS software sales could be better. He said he hopes the upcoming 3DS can fix this problem.

In addition, Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the biggest-selling Nintendo game worldwide, moving 6.15 million units in 2010. Overall, 18 Nintendo games surpassed the one million worldwide sales mark between April and December.

  • So how much closer are we to the 45 million that need to be sold before they announce the Wii's successor?
  • No doubt the 3DS sales would fix the DS sales. On a side note, I'm very surprised the Wii is still going strong considering the dwindling hype. However, I don't think a new coat of paint and a shiny package would ease their troubles. Wii HD in 2012 anyone?
  • Don't know about other stores, but our GameStop sold about 3 Wii's, 49 Xbox 360 Slims, 182 Kinect (Stand Alone), 9 Playstation Moves (includes bundles), and 4 PS3's I don't think anyone really had a good Christmas except for Microsoft. Nintendo...stop making up lies!
  • Hard to sell the Wii when almost every house has one already. Hell, my parents even bought one. They hooked it up and never even played it.
  • or is that a WIIbound?? hehe :D sorry I have a limitless supply of Wii jokes
  • Why bother to complain when they themselves have said they don't upgrade or do better because the fans will still buy it.. there are only so many fans out there you know. Besides if they have something to show and sell then we will support them, for now they prefer to throw crumbs and see how long we will pick them up...
  • out of the 3 big companies how much of there profits are from the console sales? It would seem to me far more of there income would be from accessories and software sales. If they are going to throw numbers around tell me how many titles you moved during the season. I don't care that you sold 43 million consoles if you only sold 100 million games.
  • I doubt the 3DS is gonna help anything. I mean it looks like a great system, and I can't wait to get it, but it's so expensive! I don't think a lot of people are going to buy it until the the price drops.
  • Hail Nintendo!! :D

  • Of course DS sales will be down when all they've been talking about is the DS's successor.

  • The 3ds is definitely going to make their sales sky rocket.

  • I wonder how long the Wii will go before it nose-dives.
  • unless nintendo really has a gaming console that would on par with the 360 and ps3 or better, I'd say that they should just completely focus on the portable gaming realm instead.

  • good to see Nintendo doing well, but overall for their hardware sales, what do you expect? almost everyone who wants one has it and the other people who don't have one will probably never buy one at this point since the rumors of the Wii's successor keep coming up now. but really, everyone has one that wants one, it's the same way with the 360 and PS3, yea they will sell a lot more systems, but both of those consoles will slow down because a lot people already have what they want. It will be interesting to see what happens this year hardware wise.
  • Thats great news Nintendo.

  • Congrats on the feat!

  • It's nice to see that Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the biggest-selling game of the holiday season, that game deserved all the attention, and still does.

    Congrats Ninty :)

  • Or they could just be making it all up.

  • Great for Galaxy 2. I know that the Galaxy games sell relatively softly compared to the Mario Karts and New Super Marios out there - I guess more people can just play those titles. But it's just nice to know that Galaxy 2 sold a kickas* amount of copies - that game is fantastic.

Kirby's Epic Yarn should've sold better though. Screw that overrated POS, Donkey Kong Country Returns.
