Awakened Under Development By Former Members Of Midway Chicago

When defunct Chicago-based studio Midway faced bankruptcy, the team had to stop production on an open-world superhero game called Hero, however they haven't given up on the project. Phosphor Games, a team made up of ex-Midway members, is developing a new title that borrows concepts from its previous Hero project that goes under the name Awakened.

In an interview with Gamasutra, Phosphor chief Chip Sineni talked about the current project. Hero's production began back in 2006 and "for the longest time everyone was in denial that Hero wouldn't get made, somehow." After the closure, Warner Bros. picked up Midway's assets leaving the team at Phosphor to start Awakened from scratch. "We don't have any connection to the old codebase, story, assets, whatever. What we have is the very cool idea that create-a-player is this really awesome opportunity to change your character and your abilities to whatever you want them to be," Sineni said.

Check out an early concept video of Awakened, a superhero game rising out of Hero's ashes. The game is in its infancy stages so it does look a little rough, but definitely showcases some interesting ideas. A lot of the locales are heavily influenced from Phosphor's home base (my hometown) Chicago. Definitely keeping my eye on this one.
