Analyst: Sony NGP Will Be $300-$350

Jesse Divnich, vice president of analyst services at Electronic Entertainment Design and Research, tries to put a price on the Sony NGP and rates its chances.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Divnich thinks the unit be between $300 to $350 and dubs it a "serious threat to all forms of portable entertainment."

"After seeing the specs today," explained Divnich, "if the NGP can't succeed, it is clear that the portable gaming landscape has forever changed. The future of portable entertainment is in the hands of Sony."

We've heard rumors that it could be as much as $400, but Sony Europe boss Andrew House told Eurogamer that the unit would be "affordable."

"I can't put a ballpark on it in terms of figures," he said, "but what I would say is that we will shoot for an affordable price that's appropriate for the handheld gaming space."

  • What?? thats more than the ps3! sony has gone too far this time
  • I predict....over 9000.....
  • D A M N ! ! !

  • I want to hear the price from Sony, not some analyst.

  • I predict a €250 price. If more, no one will buy it, Sony can't afford anymore missteps
  • well i think the key is to make i affordable but more than that have great games a great combonation and they could rule handheld industry
  • well i think the key is to make i affordable but more than that have great games a great combonation and they could rule handheld industry

  • I'm still guessing $200-$250. Even so... I just hope I will be able to afford it after 2011's gamepocalypse.
  • I doubt Sony will have the price go over $300. They should do the smart thing and did what Nintendo did, heck they done that since the beginning of the PS1. I'll will get it if its in affordable price. I pre-order the 3DS as soon as Nintendo announce the release date and price.
  • I still don't think it will be that expensive. I really think they'll open it up at $249, in direct competition with the 3DS.
  • $300 is a fair price in my opinion considering all of the features that Sony announced would be available with the system. Not to mention the system is being powered by some impressive hardware. $300 is also a believable price point considering this is Sony we are talking about. $350 is in my opinion getting a bit too expensive. Not a horrible price for the system but not an ideal one either.
  • Thank you Sony Europe because all in all, it's a handheld. Someone can easily steal it and have their fun with it so I think it should be around 200-300$ so that if someone does lose it/breaks it or gets it stolen, it'll still be affordable to buy another. 400$ would be too much because that's basically a console right? At that cost I'd wait two years for price cuts to buy one.
  • this wont be a threat trust me sony has to pull something big to get this off the ground because the psp brand is dead on the water, toxic assets man
  • Let's not forget that everybody thought the 3DS in the US would be priced around 300-350 dollars and it's put at 250. I bet it'll be some odd price like 280.

  • if it's $300 then it will be a day one buy

  • This thing looks like it would break if you drop it on a hard surface. Hopefully it's not too much more than than the 3DS. Otherwise, I just don't see it having a chance to compete with Nintendo's new handheld.
  • Thats better than my guess of $400-$450. With all those features $300-$350 is fair....

  • Mod
Can't be $400 if they expect to compete with 3DS. Is an iphone even that much?
  • So, why even create a PSP phone, when the NGP clearly has all of the necessary features to be a phone (albeit a slightly larger more awkward phone). It has WiFi and 3G connectivity, GPS, 3-axis compass, a microphone, a forward and rear-facing camera and a super sharp OLED touchscreen. Not to mention it's an expensive piece of kit, that Sony could charge full price to phone carriers who would then subsidize through a lower initial price of $200 along with a two year service agreement. For those who don't want to deal with carriers, they could buy it unlocked for the full retail price. That would be one way to go with selling it, to avoid losing money on it at first.
  • why dont they call it pgs...portable gameing system
