Magicka Tops Steam Charts

by Adam Biessener on Jan 26, 2011 at 11:30 AM

A $10 game from small publisher Paradox Interactive is beating out a little game called Dead Space 2 on Steam's top sellers list. Before you ask: Yes, it deserves to.

Magicka has sold over 30,000 digital copies so far, according to a press release from the publisher.

This weird little arcade-style action game may look like Diablo, but it's even less of an RPG than Gauntlet. By mixing together the game's eight elements in various combinations, players can fire lightning novas, drop healing boulders from the skies, channel dark fire energy into concentrated beams, and more. There is no limitation on spellcasting aside from the speed with which you can input the commands, making the action blindingly fast and hilariously explosive.

I've been playing Magicka heavily since it came out, and I'm loving it – but I'll be much happier when some of the bugs get ironed out and online play is fixed. The game shines in co-op, but with online multiplayer broken right now it's tough to find a partner in chaos. Paradox and developer Arrowhead Games have already released one patch and claim to be hard at work on more, so hopefully a fix is on the way.

Even so, the $10 price point is hard to resist. Expect a review soon – probably shortly after I finally get into a multiplayer game.
