[Update] Google Pulls Kongregate’s Arcade App Off Android Market

by Jeff Cork on Jan 18, 2011 at 11:12 AM

[UPDATE]:Google has pulled the application from the marketplace, telling Joystiq that Kongregate Arcade violated its developer distribution agreement by distributing other apps within the app. However, Android users can still download the app directly from Kongregate's website.

[ORIGINAL STORY]: Android users looking for more games to play on their phones and tablets just got an extra helping, courtesy of Kongregate’s new mobile app. Kongregate Arcade lets players choose from a library of more than 300 free games from the site’s Flash-game roster, with support for profiles and achievements. The app, which is available on the Android Marketplace, requires Android OS 2.2 or higher and Adobe Flash.

“In creating the Kongregate Arcade, we wanted to solve the game discovery problem that all Android owners have shared,” says Kongregate CEO Jim Greer. “It was important to reinforce our mission to provide gamers with great free games anytime, anywhere, and to broaden the reach of the Kongregate community across multiple platforms. The arrival of Kongregate Arcade is the perfect next step in that strategy.”

More games will be regularly added to the app on a weekly basis, based on how well the titles lend themselves to Android’s touch-based interface. Kongregate is also hoping that members of its development community—which the company puts at about 8,500 developers—will create all-new games for Android.

Kongregate is owned by GameStop, Game Informer’s parent company.
