Smedley: DCU To Have Significant Free Content Drops

by Adam Biessener on Jan 14, 2011 at 09:36 AM

Speaking in a recent interview, Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley reassured gamers that recently released PS3/PC MMO DC Universe Online will enjoy robust post-launch support in the form of free patches and new content on both platforms.

In an extensive interview with Eurogamer, Smedley said, “Instead of DLC you get patches every few weeks and every few months you get big patches. And you get a lot more content than you do with a standard game where you might get DLC once or twice a year. You're going to be getting things every single month, and major content updates.”

Smedley noted that he expects the development team size to come down off of its current peak of 115 members to around 50 to 75 active developers working on improving and adding to the game in the months and years to come.

He also assured PS3 players that they'll be getting the same content at the same time as PC players despite the added hurdles of deploying patches to consoles. “There's some physical, practical differences in timing of release - maybe a day or two separating them. But they should be the same,” Smedley said.

Alongside these promises, Smedley left the door open for paid expansion packs and microtransactions, though he didn't announce any specific plans.

I've been enjoying my time with DCU on both PS3 and PC – look for a long post about my experiences to go online shortly. In the meantime, how are you all digging the game so far?
