Epic Mickey Sold 1.3 Million Copies

Despite sub-par reviews, it looks like Warren Spector's Epic Mickey is on its way to being a financial success for publisher Disney Interactive.

According to a report on the Los Angeles Times website, "people familiar with the data" have revealed that the game sold an impressive 1.3 million copies in December.

While we had our problems with the game, it's good to see a third-party Wii game doing well, especially one made by a developer as passionate as Spector's Junction Point Studios. Looks like Mickey still has his mojo.

  • Great, it so deserves this, because it is really a great game, for children and adults.

  • I got this game for Christams, although I haven't played it yet. But I look forward to playing it when I get a chance. I am glad it has done well.

  • Well wish some other games could be having the same success, but yea congrats to the developers.
  • I haven't played it but it looks very innovative. Despite some of the not so great reviews, I wouldn't mind seeing more kids games aspire for more.

  • It was a great game, very fun except for the terrible camera

  • Well it's nice to see that it's still doing ok.  I still have yet to try it out, but I will eventually get around to it.

  • Walt Disney was a Nazi sympathizer. Like all things Nazi and New World Order, Americans continue to lap it up, even when it comes in the form of an average video game.
  • It kind of irritates me, since Sonic Colors was a more fun game, (And better reviewed) but since  Epic Mickey got so much more coverage it sold better. Then again, I can't really blame the public for not having faith in a 3D Sonic game, but Colors was seriously a great game.

  • It's a shame critics bash innocent children games like this. But guess what, they failed this time. This game was still successful. Good for you, Disney!

  • I actually liked Epic Mickey quite a bit, and didn't ever really notice the camera.

  • "Sub-par reviews"? The only people who gave it a truly sub-par review was you guys, and even then you gave it a 7/10- hardly a bad score.

  • Good. I was afraid that after some of the negative reviews, it wouldnt sell well. The Wii seriously needs more 3rd party games like that to stay alive, and with bad sales, it might not have happened. Aw hell, its a MIcky Mouse game, what am I talking about bad sales for?

  • me and my son love it, its actually one of the best wii game, and a way to spend some quality time whit your son's

  • Mod
Man I still need to get around to finishing this game. Good for them though, it's a great game and they deserve it.
  • I hope this means that they'll make a sequal with improved gameplay.  I was really looking forward to this game.  Warren Spector seems like a good guy and Deus Ex was one of my faves.  I'm sure he can do it.  Hopefully, though, he'll put it on the PS3 OR XBOX360, though, since I believe one of his gripes was the hardware limitations of the WII.

  • Out of the 1.3 million, how many could actually see the game with it's camera tracking?
  • I'm glad that this happened. Perhaps people might start to have faith again.

  • AWESOME NEWS! I thought the game reviewed well enough; it was certainly mixed, but people like Joystiq and IGN certainly dug it (as did I). And GI's review was plenty fair.

The game had it's problems. Namely, the sh** camera, the dreadful tutorial section of the game (3-ish hours long), the lack of character progression, and the combat in general (reminded me of Mario Sunshine, which is not a compliment). I mean, why couldn't Mickey just hit stuff? He whups all sorts of ass in Kingdom Hearts with those swords? But I digress...

The game had it's problems, sure. But it also did a ton of things right. It looked gorgeous, had a great core mechanic of thinning/painting the world, brought a proper quest system to platformers, and brought back the exploration-based platformer in general. Haven't seen one of those since Rare was a Nintendo second party. Platformers have gone back to more focused, reflex driven stuff, like Mario Galaxy 2. And that's great, but really - both types of platformers should be represented nowadays, and Mickey filled a void.

Really hope we get a refined sequel. And hope the game goes multiplatform. I'm certainly glad I played it, as it was awesome. But the more people who play it, the better. Also glad Disney actually saw success supporting a great, original game like this. Hope it teaches them to stop canceling promising stuff like Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned in favor of licensed tie-in crud like Tron Evolution.

  • only 1.3 mil? i thought Mickey Mouse and the "casual friendly" Wii console would help mickey sell like dynamite! i guess some people do read reviews.........
