Kinect And Minecraft Mesh In New Hack

by Meagan Marie on Jan 11, 2011 at 04:10 AM

Both Kinect and Minecraft have been providing ambitious and intelligent gamers with the opportunity to showcase impressive mods and hacks, and so it’s only to be expected that they would eventually be united as one.

This new Kinect hack makes possible the capture of real imagery into Minecraft landscapes. Hack creator Nathan Viniconis’ goal, in his own words, was to “Take a snapshot from a Kinect and transform it into a MineCraft save file. The Depth and Color information will be used to approximate the position and types of blocks to best represent the 3D point cloud in MineCraft.”

The snaps above indicate that Viniconis has met that goal. If you are interested in the more technical aspects of the hack, Viniconis details his work in full here. His one rule? Don’t profit. Fair enough.
