It’s Finally Real: Verizon Has Its Own iPhone 4

by Ben Reeves on Jan 11, 2011 at 06:11 AM

It’s been a long road filled with many rumors, but today, Verizon announced that it will bring Apple’s iPhone 4 over to its network beginning in February.

Verizon’s pricing is comparable to AT&T – you can own a 16GB Verizon iPhone for $199, or for $299 take home the 32GB version (both models still require a two year contract). Verizon’s unlimited data plan is $29.99 (compared to $25 for 2GB on AT&T), but the company hasn’t confirmed what data options the iPhone will have.

The only difference with Verizon’s iPhone 4 is that Big Red has added a new antenna to the unit, allowing Apple’s device to work on Verizon’s CDMA network. The new antenna shifts down the volume buttons along the side of the unit, so you’ll probably need a new iPhone case if you switch companies.

AT&T has received a lot of heat about its spotty service over the years, so will the iPhone perform better on Verizon’s network once the masses start adopting it? That remains to be seen, but Verizon claims to have a more reliable network. Unfortunately, the iPhone 4 still won’t be able to utilize the company’s expanding 4G network. One additional perk to Verizon iPhone users will be the ability to use their iPhone as a mobile WiFi connection for up to five wireless devices (though this feature could be subject to additional fees).

The iPhone 4 becomes available on Verizon on February 10. Who’s buying one?
