How Did Cats Infiltrate Nintendogs?

by Annette Gonzalez on Jan 10, 2011 at 08:48 AM

At Nintendo World 2011 a stage event was held for Nintendogs + Cats. If you haven't been able to sleep at night because you're dying to know how cats managed to weasel their way into the game with the adorable pups, producer Hideki Konno and Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata explain. Details on the game have surfaced from the event as well.

So how did the cats make it in? The answer is simple: Konno says: "During development of 3DS Nintendogs, Shigeru Miyamoto got a cat." What would've happened if he had gotten a horse?

There were also talks of releasing separate versions of Nintencats, Nintenhorse, or Nintendolphin. During the discussion, Miyamoto instead suggested the harmonious joining of dogs and cats, thus development of Nintendogs + Cats followed suit.

Here are some details that surfaced from the Nintendo World event:

  • The animals' eyes were still images in the original DS versions. The 3DS version will equip pets with eyes that react to surroundings (this was an actual talking point)
  • Camera support will allow the dogs and cats to remember the face of the player. You won't have to call them, just show your face to the camera and they'll come running
  • You can take 3D pictures of your pet that can be saved to SD cards and exchanged with friends
  • The game will also support the 3DS' augmented reality feature. Use the included AR cards to make your pet appear in actual locations
