Verizon Getting The iPhone?

by Jeff Cork on Jan 08, 2011 at 10:38 AM

When the iPhone launched back in 2007, it came with a caveat: If you wanted one of the devices, you had to go through AT&T. Since then, customers have griped about dropped calls, poor reception, and the lack of alternative options. That's about to change next week, if the Wall Street Journal's sources are correct.

Verizon has sent out invitations to tech writers for a special announcement this Tuesday in New York City. The invitations are vague, saying only "Join us as we share the latest news." The Journal is reporting that sources familiar with the matter say that the latest news in question is the official unveiling of the Verizon iPhone. It's said to be essentially the same as the iPhone 4, though it's obviously built to support Verizon's network.

It's exciting news for people who haven't been able (or willing) to sign up with AT&T, though it remains to be seen if Verizon's network is up for the inevitable spike in traffic. If nothing else, a whole lot of people are soon going to be able to play all those darn iPhone games people can't seem to shut up about.
