NPD: Digital Sales Over A Quarter Of Game Purchases

At least when you count cellphone games, NPD's latest survey indicates that 29% of game purchases are made digitally while traditional boxed products account for 71% of titles sold. One in five consumers bought a game add-on in the last three months as well, according to the research firm.

GameSpot reports that NPD's Game Purchase Drivers 2010 study also finds that digital retailers, including Steam and casual portals like Big Fish Games, are used by 47% of digital game consumers. App stores and cell phone carriers were used by 42% of digital customers, while Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and WiiWare checked in at 30% combined.

Additionally, consumers averaged 3.1 game purchases including gifts over the last three months. Approximately ten percent of game sales were fueled by trade-ins.
