Cataclysm Sells 3.3 Million Copies In 24 Hours

The most recent World of Warcraft expansion is selling well. Very well. According to internal numbers and data collected from distribution outlets, Cataclysm has sold 3.3 million units in the first 24 hours. Comparatively, the previous expansion - Wrath of the Lich King - sold 2.8 million copies in the first 24 hours at retail.

“We had to bring Azeroth to the brink of destruction in Cataclysm, but the result was our best expansion yet,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We want to thank all of our new, existing, and returning players throughout the world for their incredible enthusiasm and support, and we look forward to hearing what they think about all the new content.”

Considering World of Warcraft maintains somewhere around 12 million subscribers globally, the numbers aren’t surprising, but impressive nonetheless.

  • I want to play this so bad.  I must resist....cannot....lose...more...time...

  • I got it,just been playing here and there.(im new as well)so far of what ive played its ok don't know if it gets better or not(maybe its more fun to play with friends)
  • Oh man I have some friends who will be ceasing all social activity until classes start up again next year... Maybe not even then...

  • If the older WoW titles were available as a digital download on release, just like Cataclysm, I'm sure the numbers would be about the same. Played a bit of it but stopped rather quickly, lost way too much of it's charm especially with everything being so easy you can play blindfolded.

  • Haven't bought it yet, but plan to... Crappy internet connection and distinct lack of money preventing of course. :P

  • wow. cataclysm sold well.. . and in other breaking news, water is wet, Paris is in France, and puppies are cute.
  • That means 8 million players need to get their acts together and buy it!
  • Someone else posted that this game made more money in 24 hours than all box office movies did for the week. Sick.

  • and people say pc gaming is dying... i disagree.

  • "Barge of cocaine manages to be distributed within hours of offloading, no one is surprised"

  • bahh...good lordy that's a lot of cash. I really love games, but I don't understand the constant appeal of WOW but I can certainly respect that people do.

  • I don't know about the rest of you, but this comes as absolutely no surprise to me. Wouldn't be shocked if this thing passes 5 mil by the end of this year.

  • Of course it did this well...there's a dragon on the front of it

  • I'm still not sure I want to be sucked in by wow.

The old republic on the other hand... :)

  • is it worth it?
  • that just shows that Blizzard still have a huge community...

  • More people to enjoy the experience with.
